Feed with one breast or two each time

I am very confused. Books say we should empty one breast and let the baby have another at each feeding. However, the nurses at govt clinic say that we should feed baby with one breast at one go.

My breasts get swell (very hard) after 2-3 hours. How can I solve the problem?

健康院的姑娘話每次要食2邊是想每邊都刺激多d,
bb7日後開始會谷奶, 咁樣餵無谷得咁辛苦,
我早期都係咁樣餵

我到大約bb滿月後, 開始每次只餵一邊,
因為前奶係會多d水份, 後奶脂肪較多,
咁食多d後奶係會襟飽d, 可以隔耐少少才再到下一餐

但如果在谷奶時(如5個鐘都未餵過bb或pump 奶)
我就都會兩邊餵, 唔係有一邊一陣會變石頭

Thanks for sharing. If he doesn't fall asleep, I will feed him with both each time (each for about 15 minutes). I want to save time in hand-pumping milk which is quite tiring. I have an electric (Pigeon) but it is no good. Another manuel one (also Pigeon) is for getting rid of excess milk and the pumped milk can be used. So I am now using my hands.

My BB always falls asleep in the middle so it's difficult to know whether he has taken any 後奶.

健康院的姑娘 (Western District) asked me to feed BB with one breast each time but I find this method not very good as the other one will become a 'rock' and hence makes it difficult for BB to suck at the next feeding.

I called the BF Hotline of the Health Dept this morning and the nurse has not returned my call yet

我最初時都係兩邊餵, 但我發覺佢食得好密，後來試下只食一邊，咁佢一路食一路食仲有喎 (如果冇的話佢會好妏). 咁我就只比佢食一邊。兩邊輪流食。

另外一邊最好就泵出來，又可以預先儲定存貨。

Why we should give bb to suck at 1 breast? It's because we need to empty the breast as much as possible so that
1/ the body can generate more milk as it tells it the demand &
2/ we can avoid blocking.

I got inflammation because of not emptying my breasts enough.

If the other breast is too hard, pump it out or let bb suck it after emptying the first one.

I was a mother who breast fed for 20 months.
With one breast only, the other breast is also stimulated and drops milk. It is inconvenient and wasteful for the milk. The each breast needs to wait for too long time and it is easy to be struck and painful.
No book recommends using one breast at one time. [size=medium]The two breasts of one person can produce different amount of milk. That is me. So, how can you tell each time is even if only one breast is used?
[size=medium]Less frequently one breast is sucked each day, less milk will be produced. The amount of milk will be gradually reduced. :-( If a mom feeds a baby 8 times a day with 1 breast each time, there are only 4 times each breast is sucked.
[size=medium]There should be at least 4 times of sucking/ pumping a day to maintain the milk supply.

嬰兒腹絞痛是嬰兒期偶有的現象，與餵養方法（人奶或奶粉）無關。下述情況可能導致吃人奶的嬰兒出現不安、煩躁或腹痛：

每次哺乳都以兩邊乳房餵哺，以致嬰兒吃下前奶太多而後奶不足（前後奶不平衡）。

儘管母親乳量充足，嬰兒卻總是吃不夠而要求吃奶，並且顯得煩躁不安；排出大量稀便和腹氣（放屁）。

處理方法

嬰兒吸吮的方法必須正確，應每次先排「空」一邊乳房，以確保寶寶獲得後奶中的脂肪。只有當嬰兒吃完第一邊乳房後仍有肚子餓的徵象，才餵另一邊乳房。

How do we know that 一邊乳房 is 排「空」? No more milk. But there is always a little when you squeeze it.

As a mom who has breast fed a baby for 20 months with both breasts each time, I would like to continue to say that using both breasts is better than one breast.
*I stress that I am not attacking any body.* I just want to share what is relatively reasonable. Please forgive me if I hurt.

Hindmilk comes usually after 5 minutes. You will notice its colour if you have an experience of pumping milk.
[size=medium]Hindmilk will also come if you switch two breasts at each meal. The breasts becoming soft after the meal is a proof of emptying them, not whether using one side or two.

Here is a website from 台中榮民總醫院 兒童醫學部, mentioning that the way to increase/ maintain the milk supply is to have each breast empty every 3 hours. If you feed with only one breast each time, there will be 6 hours for each breast to empty:

Thanks for your sharing. Actually, I believe I did not make myself clear. We should not limit to feed at one breast but be careful that we need to empty one before switching to another.

It's great that you can bf your bb for 20 months! . Share more with us so that we can bf our beloved ones.

我持續餵了兩個孩子4年啦，而家都仲餵緊！我都是餵兩邊的！讓我分享我的經驗吧！ :mrgreen:

生了大女之後，我初時也是每餐餵一邊的，第二餐就餵另一邊。一直到囡囡3個月大，仍是如此。囡囡每次食45mins，3個鐘食一次。但那時我快要返工，3個小時餵一次的話，在我上班時間她便要用奶瓶餵3 次，我是routine feeding 的，也怕日間pump 不夠奶給她。後來有人教我，可以一邊餵30mins，之後給囡囡吃另一邊10mins 。多少mins 只是一個約數，按bb的情況而定，因我囡囡之前要餵45mins，而當中有時她是吸著訓的。最主要是囡囡吸空了一邊的乳房 (這是自己feel 到的)，有食到後奶，便立刻給她另一邊，至她真的飽了，便會停。這樣，囡囡竟然立刻可以4小時才餵一次！我上班pump 奶也沒有那麼大的壓力。

所以到餵細仔，我都是餵兩邊的。

其實bb漸漸長大，食一邊也未必足夠，都要給他食兩邊啦！

啜兩邊的另一好處，除了如pearlkam 所提防止谷奶、乳腺阻塞之外，就是減少兩邊乳房大小不一的問題出現。試問一邊乳房谷奶谷6-8個小時，唔塞、唔大小邊都幾難啦！ :-(

其實我一路都有看大家的討論,相信討論之中大家得到不少!!
呢個問題我一路都有點疑惑,浸會姑娘教我餵2邊,健康院話餵1邊,因為我想阿女食多d後奶,結果我餵1 邊,除了夜晚最後個餐,因為我發覺個餐餵1邊的話,阿女唔食夜奶,我個胸會爆炸!!食一邊真係好易谷奶,成6個鍾先食一次,尤其依家開始食粥仔之後!!咁點解健康院會教食一邊呢??係唔係要打去問下,睇下佢地點答 ?-( ?-(

醫院和健康院的姑娘都教我要每次餵一邊, 她們的解釋是只吃一邊, bb 才會吃到較多後奶, 會較飽肚.
我覺得她們是怕新手媽媽在(同一餐)短時間內兩邊餵, 令到 bb 吃到前奶多過後奶, 才這樣說.

我自己的理解是:
每次先餵一邊, 如果 bb 吃了一段時間, 你自己覺得那邊乳房已經(差不多)排空但 bb 仍然未飽, 就給他吃另一邊.
同時也要視乎媽媽的奶量. 以我為例, 我是個多產的媽媽 所以到現在我每次只是餵一邊, 而餵完 bb 之後, 另一邊都要泵清. (我以前一天泵 6 - 7 次奶)

我覺得重點是要常排空乳房/盡量減少谷奶的次數, 以保持奶量. 應該因應自己的情況而決定每次餵一邊還是餵兩邊.

唔.....會唔會佢地無乜人餵人奶餵多過6個月......！ :tongue:
我估咋！ 因為我見有d 媽媽講係健康院得的餵奶資訊有時不盡相同......
同埋以前我帶我的小朋友返健康院，d 姑娘/醫生聽見我餵左咁耐.....都好驚訝咁！
可能佢地受訓時係教要餵一邊？或者對初生bb，餵一邊已夠！

但我覺得餵人奶係無一定規條要點餵，因為個個bb 都唔同！好似我個女係要啜到盡果種，而囝囝就係餵飽就夠，你求佢都唔會再啋你！但basic knowlege 當然係要知啦！

我說的餵兩邊，係先餵完一邊，empty 了一邊的奶，才餵另一邊。好似我果時一邊餵了30mins，咁囡囡已食晒後奶，再餵另一邊10mins，都一樣食到另一邊的後奶，咁咪可以飽耐d，可以相隔耐些才要食下一餐。

至於你囡囡食10mins 就玩玩吓，她是7個月大吧，可能有好奇心啦，所以食無耐就被其他事物吸引了去！
我囝囝也有一段時間這樣，我便等他玩夠了再繼續餵，總之要他食左兩邊才放他走。

不過個個bb食幾耐都唔同，最重要是，你知道他已empty 了一邊的乳房，再給他另一邊，如他真係夠不肯食另一邊，便將這邊的奶pump 出一點，以免會谷奶至塞。

一天泵 6 - 7 次奶,真係要笑你係"乳牛" 好勁!!
我試過一餐邊餵邊泵(泵到5-6oz),下餐再黎泵得2-3oz,跟住放棄!! :-|
