There are 2 types of image sensor used in webcams, namely CCD and CMOS. Most expensive and pro webcams use CCD sensor because it gives a better picture qualilty. Actually, CCD sensor is also used in digital cameras. On the other hand, CMOS is found in many cheap webcams. The problem with CMOS sensor is that under low light conditions (e.g. indoor), the picture quality is very poor.
