Hello Sydney Mums,

With school holiday starting next week, let's share ideas on what we can do and where we can go to have fun as a family. (also share ideas on great weekend outtings)

This looks like a good day trip for kids aged 3+ and the whole family: http://www.illawarrafly.com/
The Illawarra Fly is a 500 metre long, 25 metre high elevated tree top walk ascending at a gentle grade and suitable for visitors of all mobilities. Nestled amongst the temperate rainforest of the Southern Highlands the treetop walk takes you along the picturesque Illawarra escarpment and offers inspiring views from Shellharbour to Bass Point, Lake Illawarra and the South Pacific Ocean.
For the thrill seeker a 45 metre high lookout is ascended via a spiral stairway offering panoramic views, combined with the beauty of the rainforest. View the Blackwoods, Gully Gums and Sassafras from a vantage point generally reserved for our flying friends.

Go to the Edge! The springboard cantilevers bounces gently, high over the picturesque Illawarra Escarpment.

Another place is Wenworth Common at Sydney Olympic Park:

http://www.sydneyolympicpark.com.au/venue_hire/venues_and_sites/wentworh_common

Note - no need to worry about the Site Hire Fee as long as you are not planning a huge birthday party. I have been there many times with family and friends and have no problem in finding a nice spot to watch the kids play & have a relaxing picnic / bbq.

Close by is the BrickPit Ring Walk (basically on the other side of the carpark):

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk - great views, the weather now is good for this (as long as it doesn't rain). Summer maybe too hot. Cafes and beaches everywhere along the walk, so can have breakfast, lunch and tea anywhere anytime. Mums & Dads get a good workout on their arms carrying the little ones.

Bondi is usually impossible to find parking, so I suggest you do this walk in reverse and park at Coogee, or park at Tamarama.

http://www.about-australia.com/travel-guides/new-south-wales/sydney/attractions/natural/bondi-to-coogee-coastal-walk/

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Offering visitors to Sydney an opportunity to join in and do what the locals do, the Bondi to Coogee Walk is a popular coastal walk offering beautiful coastline vistas, cosy beaches and cafe strips for refuelling. Its is 6kms long and takes about 2 hours to complete at a good pace, but break that with a freshly squeezed juice or a relaxed coffee and you could take all day - finishing with a relaxed swim at Coogee Beach.

This walk heads south from the promenade of Bondi Beach. It is mostly level,or gently sloping and combines coastal views, places to swim and places to eat. Easy to follow signs along the coast line, with numerous stops.

Start:
Head south from the promenade at Bondi Beach.
Stop 1:
At the south end of Bondi pass Bondi Iceberg's club, where members swim summer and winter.
Stop 2:
At Mackenzies Point, enjoy the views north and south. There is an Aboriginal carving of a fish near the lookout.
Stop 3:
Tamarama is a small beach, have a break at the cafe.
Stop 4:
Bronte Beach, have a swim in the surf or at the ocean pool plus a number of cafes.
Stop 5:
Waverley Cemetery has great ocean views and graves of many famous Australian's.
Stop 6:
Clovelly is a sheltered beach.
Stop 7:
Gordons Bay is great for scuba diving or snorkelling.
Stop 8:
Coogee Beach is around the next headland. Stay the day at the beach or walk around Coogee and the many signts. Bus to Circular Quay 373 depart every 10 to 15 minutes, or take the 353 back to Bondi Junction.

Degree of difficulty: Easy to medium with a steep section.

Love this park. Have great memories of canoeing on the water. Can't wait for my kids to be more responsible before going on the water again.

My husband took the kids to Clown Town at Rosehill at the beginning of the week - the older 2 loved the 8m climbing wall, while the youngest had lots of fun with the other equipments (remember not to lean back on the slide - my son went so fast that he got friction burn on his elbow).

Read this in BK's 自由講場:

明天想捉蜆仔,請問有咩好去處
Very jealous, wishing that I am in Hong Kong to join them.

The only beach I know of which has pippies is Anna Bay in Port Stephens. In recent years, the government has introduced the following law: In NSW, anglers can only use pipis for bait, and it is an offence to remove them more than 50 metres beyond the high tide mark. There is also a bag limit of 50 pipis per angler.

Even with this law, Anna Bay is still a favourite for me as it is a beautiful beach - long stretch of clean sand and fairly shallow, great for families. Children can build sand castles and dig for pippies to play (but NOT to take away with them).

Port Stephens is approx 2.5 hours drive north from Sydney, so we usually make it into a long weekend (or a week long holiday). Looking for accommodation is very easy. We have used http://www.winningholidays.com.au to book online.

A personal favourite is: http://www.winningholidays.com.au/ybi?agent=WIN&mod=site-ipage1&Code=76
Great view, unit is fairly new and very comfortable (though need to clean the spa on the deck before use due to leaves and wind, and drive way is steep so must be careful with your car).

This is list of attractions at Port Stephens:

Kids love animals. If you want to experience life on a working farm, you may consider:
http://www.kcfarmstay.com.au/index2.html
Kookaburra Cottage Farmstay
We stayed there 2 years ago (kids' age were 1 / 4 / 7).
Their website is pretty accurate and their cottage is basic but reasonable.

Glad you liked it.

You can combine this with visit to Anna Bay & Tomaree National Park
http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/nsw/northcoastnsw/portstephens/attractions/gardens/tomaree-national-park
The view at Tomaree Headland is worth the walk.

My husband and kids all love to watch planes, so we always visit:

This is where we went earlier in the year for my daughter's 9th birthday:
https://www.thetearoom.com.au/
The Tea Room at QVB

She had a great time, felt very much like a grown up.

Just my 99, her & me - so she had 100% of our attention. We went shopping afterwards, and she picked out a whole outfit for the first time in her life (with advise from us of course).

Hi sbandliz,

I really appreciate your effort in introducing great places for kids and families!
I would like to plan for a 2-3 days trip for 5-year old son in the school holiday. Since he has never stayed overnight in other places ever since we arrived here last Mar, I think it will be a good experience for me to have such trip. But my silly problem is: I am not good at driving (I got driving license last July only after several trials, and I am only a 短程專線司機 for my son.) My husband is only a little bit better than me.
If we travel by public transportation, do you have any suggestion on where to go. I love the farm stay you mentioned, and I am thinking of blue mountain too. Are they feasile and any even closer suggestions (I am living near Hurstville)?

Josephine

Hello Josephine,

I just want to share the fun I've had.

Have you considered going to Canberra during September & October? You can catch a train to Canberra then hire a car for a few days.
http://www.visitcanberra.com.au/

http://www.floriadeaustralia.com/about/what_is_it.cfm
Floriade is on from 13th Sep to 12th Oct. Worth visiting to look at the flowers, plus they have activities throughout the day for children and adults.

Maybe combine that with visits to the Parliament House and Questacon. (info are all on the Visit Canberra website)

These are the places we have stayed at before which are good:
http://www.manukapark.com.au/menu/menu.htm
Manuka Park Serviced Apartments
http://www.kingstonterrace.com.au/
Kingston Terrace Serviced Apartments

We have also stayed here with our Mothersgroup (12 adults, 14 kids):
http://www.victorlodge.com.au/
Victor Lodge Bed & Breakfast
Great for the budget. They do have some self contained rooms. Overall quite reasonable & comfortable for the family.

Hello Josephine,

Hurstville to Wollongong is only an hours drive down south.
http://www.tourismwollongong.com.au/

If your family loves water, then Jamberoo Park will be popular:
http://www.jamberoo.net/
This park closes for Winter, but will reopen in September.

Maybe combine this with the Grand Pacific Drive and the Illawarra Fly if you are staying a few days. (info on Tourism Wollongong website)

I have not stayed in Wollongong for a long while, but another Mum has recommended:
http://www.kiama.net/holiday/kendalls/default.htm
Kendalls Beach Holiday Park, which is right on the beach.

回覆 #1 sbandliz 的文章

Hi Liz,

Thanks very much for your information. I really love Canberra when I have a quick glance at the website you provided. There are so many activities for kids. However, after I checked the train schedule, I am a bit hesitated. The train takes 4.5 hours, plus the 1 hour I need for travelliing from Hurstville to Central, there's too much for my over-active son and my hubby who don't use to travel long distance.

And thanks very much for the other suggestions. I am only aware of your 2nd posting just now. I will take a detail look.

Josephine

Hello Josephine,

I do understand that long trips and children just doesn't mix well. Though I have found that car trips are better than using public transport with my kids. This is because I can control when we stop to have a break, plus I can be better prepared with things to distract them (water, snacks, games etc).

Over the years, I have collected quite a few audio books on CD. This way, the kids and I get immersed in the story line, and forget about being stuck in a car. If you are not sure, try borrowing some from your local library and see.

These I would recommend:
The BFG by Roald Dahl
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Matilda by Roald Dahl
The 27th annual African hippopotamus race by Morris Lurie
Aliens ate my homework by Bruce Coville
(of course, there are many many other good books, but these are my kids' current favourites)

I used to pick up my husband from work after picking up the kids from school, so for many afternoons we were stuck in traffic for an hour. Add that to the hour drive I had to and from work during school hours! (total time spent in the car was >3 hours in those bad old days) These CDs (and a complete set of Harry Potter on CD) have helped me to keep my sanity.

Liz

This sounds fun:

http://www.galstonrotary.org.au/galston_scarecrow_gathering.htm

The Galston Scarecrow Gathering

The scarecrows will be gathering again in Galston and District from the 14th September. They will meet at The Hornsby Shire Garden Expo in Fagan Park for judging on Sunday 21st September.

Making scarecrows is a fun activity in which all the family can join as well as businesses and community groups. To take part all you have to do is to build your scarecrow. Whilst it can be a traditional scarecrow you can just let your imagination run wild to create all manner of impressive scarecrows and whimsical characters. You can use almost anything to make them from the usual old clothes, odds and ends, discarded items, junk, Council clean ups and pre-loved shops. Many ideas can be found on the Internet under ‘scarecrow festivals’.

Businesses are encouraged to use scarecrows to promote their business. Scarecrows will be around the shops, villages, road sides and properties. Why not make and display your scarecrow even if you do not wish to enter The Judging Competition?

Prizes will be awarded in four categories — Traditional, Theme, Schools, and Fantasy/Contemporary (for all those who aspire to the highest possible challenge). There will be a People's Choice award for their favourite scarecrow, sponsored by Bunnings Dural.

Most scarecrows will leave their homes on Sunday 21st September to gather at The Hornsby Shire Country & Garden Fair in Fagan Park for a party, judging and prize giving.

Entry to The Fagan Park Gathering and Judging Competition costs only $5.

The Hornsby Shire Country & Garden Fair features information stalls, plant and produce sales, children's rides, food, drinks and much more. Entry to the Expo is free. It attracted around 6,000 people in 2007.
