well... I don't wanna waste time to type in chinese.. hope you can read
Dr. Mary Wong is a nice OB/GYN, she is very patience as well.
What kind of insurance you have right now?
If you don't have insurance..
It makes no much difference between the OB, or hospital you are going to. they charge almost the same.
Prepare
USD$3000 for follow up
USD$12,000-$15,000 for natural birth
USD$15,000-$18,000 for C-section
USD$2,500-$3,000 for epidural
Mary Wong delivered my 2 children.. so far, I have no complaint at all. I do recommend friends to her clinic.
Just.. Beth Isreal Medical Center.. a bit old.
Nurse there will try to arrange chinese patients in the same room.. 2 patients in 1 room.
or you can order single room, you can add $500-$1000 per night, so your husband or mother can stay over night with you.

i stayed there for 5/6 days cos c-section, i stayed in a room with a chinese too.
i didnt know i could choose a individual room if i could pay more. i'd better choose it cos it was like so bored and inconvenient stayed there for a long long week. i missed my hubby so so much during night time.
Wow?!! You spent around$20,000 USD for the hospital stay??
What if you have insurance? Still need to pay that much??
To be honest to you, I'm a single mom, and wouldn't have that much money to pay the bill.
koalababies
I guess you got misunderstanding. If you don'thave insurance, you have to pay.
If you have insurance, you may not need to (it depends on when you get that insurance, and what insurance you have) that is the question I ask you at the beginning, which insurance you have ??
Could you mind to tell us?

silly Koala,
Why you will have that co-pay $170 for ER visit?
My husband is city employee with GHI as well.
My children visit ER many times (especially for Amanda) and have never paid a cent.
Unless it is not an emergency, that they don't even let you to have any physical examination/ not let you to go into the observation room for MD to check you. Then, you will need to pay $50 per false visit. Otherwise, it is free.
Amanda got medication from ER and with a diagnosis everytime, even she did not admitted to the hospital, just released from ER, we didn't need to pay anything.
You need to check with your benefit coordinator.
Also, you just need to check with Mary Wong about your coverage. For pregnancy, you supposed to be covered for full. Ask Mary (Dr.Wong's assistant) about your coverage. She is very patience, and expereinced.
You have the regular GHI or High Option. After gave birth, you may want to upgrade your GHI to high option(if you have regular), as you may need to make a lot of "un- expected" visits to peds office.
Moreover, you need to report your pregnancy to your boss, so they can notify your insurance company.

Oh I got you!!
I'm a city employee.
I have GHI for Medical,
and Empire BC/BS for Hospital.
前排去ER都俾左$170 co-pay...
分分鐘maternity可能唔包。
Hahaha, I've just found out that we are both Staten Islanders.
Actually I'm a new city employee, don't know much abt my benefits.
The basic GHI plan doesn't fully cover the kids'
medical expenses?
Um....I didn't expect I have to spend so much $$ after child-birth.
As for a single mom like me, $$ is really a big issue.
When I was younger(<18yrs old) I was eligible for Healhplus, and they cover everything in full,
which was pretty cool.
But I think the family must have really low income to be qualify for that.

Koalababie,
Upgrade the GHI will give you a lot of freedom. Althought, the basic is already cover everything.
You may able to try to submit your bill from ER to GHI and see if you can claim them back.
For Family health plus, and child health plus.
Family health plus for family whom has really low income, which you will not eligible for it, and you are working for city, you do not need to apply for that.
For your child, that is under your GHI plan.
You don't need to worry about anything relates to your medical, vision, dental insurance.
Enjoy your pregnancy and 1 person time right now. As your little one comes, then you will be very busy. Who will take care of your little one when you return to work?

Thanks for your information!
Haha, I really want to ENJOY my time of being a SINGLE, I was planning for a short trip to Mexico or somewhere not too far away by myself. But I don't think that can happen, because my boss & my mom wouldn't give me the permission to do so.
I think I need to save some Annual leaves for maternity too.....The Union sucks!! No maternity leave for pregnant employees...we'll have to use up our own annual days, and sick days, after that we could apply for disabiltiy...but that will only pay no more than $800 a month.
My anxiety arises each time I think abt the child birth. Not only the process of giving birth,
but also how to take care of the child, and like what you asked "who's going to take care of the kid for me?"
My grandma lives w me, but she's 78 yrs old, and she needs somebody to take care of her too.
My mom works and has her own financial burden.
The 1st 2 yrs may need to ask some retired mom to take care of it for me.
Once the baby turns 3 yrs old, I will send the kid to daycare....but I know very little abt these things up to this point....still horrified by the fact that I'm going to be a single mom....
May be you have more experience than I do,
u can give me some information.
Like is there any cheap/low cost child care center on S.I.?
Are u a full time housewife?

I am a full time working mom, and a mother of 2, Amanda is 6 years old, she is studying in Manhattan Nest+M, and Gabriel is almost 3.
Amanda was in daycare since 2, and Gabriel was in daycare since he was 1year 9 months old.
Both of them attend the same day care.
SmileRus at Sand lane close to South Beach.
it is a russian daycare, my co-workers' children go there as well.
They open from 7am -7pm, serves hot meals.
They have infant, toddlers care, and day care from 3 to 4 years old, kindergarten and up to grade 3.
They charge Amanda(she was there from 2 to 4 years old) and Gabriel $670 per month. Also, when PS closed for holiday, they take Amanda as temporary day care.
I 100% rely on them (day care), Amanda can get into Nest+M, we believe that at least 33% from the teachers in this day care. I don't trust any baby sitter, no more.. they will hurt your child as 24 hours to look after the same child, they lost their patience.
and they got lazy and lazy.. so end up, I have to do all housework organize the table and toys, clean the dust, when they are on their day off, so why I have to pay $1800 for a live-in and I still have to back her up??
My job (as a nurse manager in Asian community outreach program) gave me a lot of flexibility, if my kids sick, my boss allows me to run to daycare/school to pick my child up and send him/her to peds.
koalababies,
you did not count all formula, diapers, clothes, even you breast feeding, there is the beginning of spending money, if I were you, I will not go travelling as I need to save every penny for the lil one. There will be a huge expense.. trust me.
If you need us to help you, you need to voice.
you can go to the topic on the top, I have wrote several forum about infant care, sit moon..
I was a child care worker before I went to study nursing.
I was a breast feeding consultant, and I was concentrated on pediatric for several years.
Now, I am working for an non-profit home care organization because they gave me what I need. work weekday, 9-4, and also, I can leave anytime if my children need me. I teach the visiting nurses and provide health education in many Chinese senior centers located in Queens and Brooklyn, if you read Sing Tao or World Journal, you may see me on and off at the social service pages.

koala,
I woke up at 5:45am, kids woke up at 6am. morning routine, breakfast, dress up, and we leave home at 6:45am.
By Gabriel's day care at 7am. then rush to Manhattan before 8am.
Then, I will go back to Brooklyn to work at around 8:30am. It is a long ride everyday, but my husband can't help at all, because he works from 6am to 2pm. so, I am all by myself in the morning.
Check pm.. about your situation.
i'm going to us for give birth for my first baby next week. i'm wondering how to check th e OB doctor and the fees . Any suggestions? thanks for all BK mama.
Usually, up front for USD$3000 for body check as OB check up, about USD$12,000 for natual delivery, if C-section, it is about USD$15,000 and up if you have complication.
ask your relatives to read the Chinese newspapers, more than 40 OB/GYN on the news ad section everyday

Do you mean.. by during your pregnancy, any charges?
That is around USD$3,000 (no matter you come with 8 weeks, or 31 weeks) they charge the same.
because they consider that it is a service package, so better come early than later, as more complication at 3rd trimester.
