Hi all Oz mommy, would you mind share your experience with me?
Since we are planning move to Oz in coming months, these days I am brainstorming the stuffs I should bring along with. I have lot of concerns and uncertainties, would you please give some suggestions?
1) About furniture -- did you take your used and new furniture from HK to Oz? Since I'm not sure the rental houses in Oz would be usually fully equipped or not, and would the furniture sizes match Oz household needs.
2) About daily necessaries -- did you buy bulky "M-towel", "Temple", diapers, shampoo etc. before moving to Oz? If I transfer all these things through a cargo, would it incur import duty? In contrast, if I transfer all these through my personal luggage, even "bulk volumn", is it ok?
3) About home appliance -- do you think it is worth to buy and shift NEW home appliances from HK to Oz, e.g. washing machine and refrigerator? My concerns are: (a) the prices, (b) any installation standards difference? and (c) any import duties incured? The Custom webpages said they charges tax on items using less than 12 months. But how come they check the used time?
air cond and refrigerator require a import lic from 2010 (which will cost you AUD400)
TV - the digital system is not the same as in HK and thus you will have to buy a set-top box here to receive digital signal
Blu-ray player - cannot play the disc in aust cos the region code is different
by the way, if you are comming as a migrant, you can apply for "migrant connection card" from qantas, which allow you to take 40kg (per adult) of luggage.
Remeber to carefully clean all your used shoes, and vacuum cleaner (inside) where possible come will soil, dead or live bugs.
TV, fridge, washing machine suggest to buy here in case it break down, it can cover by warrenty or extended warrenty. I washing machine broke down nearly end of factory warrenty then I got a whole new replacement with another 2 yrs factory warrenty....
our family moved to sydney half year ago. we didnt bring any furniture and electronic goods with us but except the "Thermos". i found its very useful to cook soup or food.

Thanks all your kinder help. Now I think I should not buy any washing machine, refrigerator...etc. and I should check the shoes cleanness before entry (<--quite strange to do this).
BTW, 意粉-媽媽 and hk_woman68, why do you think "Thermos" is a worth to buy item? Is the gas fee in Oz very high so you have to save more? Or you just get to use Thermos in both HK and Oz??
And...could anyone share your experience about Question 2? Will bulky daily necessaries lead to levy?
If possible, anything made in plastic like big plastic box, bucket etc etc. Here is bloody expensive.
If you like fishing, those Japan/Taiwan made fishing rod worth to buy some.... here hardy found or too expensive.

i never use the "Thermos" in hk before, but one of my friend who lives in sydney and highly recommend me to buy it over. it really save alot of time for me.
in between, one more thing i recommend you to bring over here is "electric jar pot", coz u can find lot of brands and models in hk and look much nicer and its hardly find this kind of electronic goods here.

Great! Thanks all your lovely tips. I haven't thought plastic boxes and drawers would be such useful and treasurable! 等我仲諗住搬屋前掉晒去~~
And, you made my mind fluctuating, should I buy a Thermos? =P
ngtft, buy a lot just because my kid and I get skin allergy that we have to use specific shower gel. And as fas as I could remember, the "M-towel" in Oz is quite expensive. Also I want to minimize the suffer from exchange rate... haha.
