In July 2010, a rountine medical check-up revealed something worry me, & landed me in the hospital for a medical operation in July & August 2010. This is my first encounter with Dr. Chan - my impression is 陳惠娟醫生是位仁醫
The story goes like this - I have rountine medical check-up in every summer - the lastest one revealed something worry my family Doctor (Dr. Lau) - I have known her for more than 15 years & asked her to recommend a good specialist. Dr. Lau told me, as far as she knows, the most well-known doctor in breast disease is Dr. Polly Cheung Suk-Yee (she worked for Kwong Wah Hospital in the 1970s & introduced new Surgery method to HK -she has trained up several assistant doctors (her students). Nowadays, they're all very famous doctors (& all in private practice) Among these students, my family doctor recommends Dr. Chan Wai Kuen most, for her good 醫德& 醫術.
I went to her clinic & found her a very gentle, polite & 內斂 person. She concentrated on explaining what she detected from my various X-ray, her judgement & suggested methods to help me. She talked about the financial burdens involved in every process & allow me to make the final decision. She seldom says any "fancy things" to comfort me ( I think it's right, if she says something "fancy & unrealistic" to comfort me, I'll not take immediate measure to tackle my health problem...) She just sits there quietly & patiently, allowing me to think things over & make up my mind.
Staying in the hopitsal & visiting her clinic, I found Dr. Chan working from 9:00am to 10:30 pm). She visits patients in the hospital at 9:00 pm, hurried to her clinic & stay there till 10:30 pm (yes, I was one of the problematic patients who visited her clinic at 10:30 pm). I find it a bit strange, her consultation fee is just only HK$300 ...
I ask my family doctor Dr. Lau, about these - she told me many doctors in HK are keen on spending time meeting the Press, being interviewed by TV programs, holding luxurious fund-raising balls & parties ... ...
But there're also very good doctors, like Dr. Chan, keen on learning new medical technique to enhance their skill ...devoting time for their patients.
I'm recovering well from the surgery. As a patient, I'll continue to visit Dr. Chan for my annual medical check-up.
Here is my comment posted on "seedoctor.com":
Dr Chan did the operation for me. She is a good and patient doctor. I had Fine Needle test at her office. When it was found something bad in the lump. She asked me to come to her clinic that night. She explained clearly what I should do. I left her clinic at 10pm and one more patient after me.
Before the night I had operation, she visited me at around 11:45pm, to check and confirm the poisition for the injection for certain test which would be done at 8:30 next morning.
She explained clearly to me on the follow up treatments. I said I wanted to have follow up treatments at government hospital because of the financial burden. She said no worry, she would make arrangement for me. Some breast cancer patients said not all doctors would make arrangement with the government hospital for the patients. The patients have to do themselves right after the operation. They said Dr Chan is good.
