My 4 years old daughter can not fully express herself in English....is this normal? I have always speak to her in English ever since she is born. She learns Cantonese from school, and now her Cantonese speaking is much better than her English. She speaks very broken English.
Myself and my Filipino helper speak to her in English and daddy speaks Cantonese. I saw your forum perviously on you son can ready so well, ichi-ban!! Where did you buy the flash cards, they are well good. I was very carefree with my daughter until I realised how difficult it is to get into a good primary school.
This is normal when only 2 ppl speaks in English with her. I have the same problem when my son was 2. I found him couldn't pick up the Cantonese and English as well as others.
Finally, I picked the Cantonese at that time.
Try to do more reading with your little one. This may help for her speaking.
my son's cantonese is very very good... he is picking up English now, but it is ok because we speaks Cantonese at home, English is very easy to learn, I am sure he will be able to speak English when he is older, so I am not worry!!!
Thanks Juta!
Her oral in both English and Cantonese is better now. It has improved a lot when we started reading together. She now is confident with reading by herself and expressing herself. Thanks all for your advise. She is now attending Putunghua lesson once a week and we see significant improvement too. She even initiate the conversation in Putunghua.
Living in asia country, our next generation really needs to be multi-lingual, and English, cantonese and Putonghua are surely essential!
