"the Level II ultrasound, is an examination designed to look for anatomic abnormalities of the fetus. It is generally performed between 18 and 22 weeks menstrual age.

In general, the examiner will look at the fetal brain , heart, stomach, kidneys, spine and umbilical cord insertion site (the area of the navel or umbilicus or "belly button"). In addition, the examiner will determine the position of the fetus, the amount of amniotic fluid present (too much, too little or the correct amount) and the location of the placenta.

a Level II ultrasound examination should be performed by an experienced individual (preferably a physician) using adequate equipment and interpreted by a physician with experience in doing this kind of work."
