my son is now 9 mths old. when he was 3 mths old, he had fever one day. having taken paracetamol for 3-4 times, he did not recover. i sent him to sanatorium for hospitalization. for the 1st two days, our peadiatrician just prescribed him with paracetamol and antibiotic. however, the temp did not come down. about the 3rd day when he was in the hospital, we found rash over his body and his limp note (one side) was swollen. his eyes and lips turned red. my peadiatrician then diagnosed that he had kawasaki. he immediately called a cardiologist to do an ultra-sound. ultra-sound showed that his heart was normal. but, this cardiologist had reservation if my son really had kawasaki. anyway, i still took the advice of my paediatrician. my son was prescribed with ivig at about 10 p.m. that day, his temp dropped in the midnight. he was hospitalized for a weel. 2 months afterwards, i took him to the cardiologist for follow-up. the result was normal and the cardiologist told me no need to check again in future.
when my son was sick, i had done a lot of research on kawasaki. it happened mostly when the kid was 6 months to 5 years. so my paediatrician said my son's case was rare. this disease was difficult to diagnose. the early symptoms were just like fever or flu. but, it could not be treated by paracetamol or antibiotic. some doctors would mis-diagnosed this disease and the kid would have fever for more than a month.
this disease sometimes could be fatal as it attacked the artery of the kid. the reason why the kid suffered this disease would have to see a cardiologist was because the most vulnerable artery would be those in the heart.
it was so fortunate that my paediatrician could diagnose this disease on such an early stage. it was also the comments of the nurses in the paediatric ward of sanatoriam hospital.
Hi, J.Chau,
Though the doctor said there is no need to follow up in the future, do you think it is necessary to do yearly check-up? Did you inform 健康院 that your son took gamma goblin?
Thanks!
i can read chinese, but i just can't type chinese.
i'm thinking of it. when my son was in the hospital, it was dr. maurice leung who took the ultrosound for my son. my paediatrician recommended me to see dr. roxy lo for the follow up check up. it was dr. lo who told me and was also stated in his report no further check up was required. i did not tell the govt clinic my son had suffered kawasaki as i did not take my son to check up regularly there. i have taken my son to check up and have the immunization at my paediatrician's clinic. But, i have make appointment to take my son to the govt clinic this coming saturday. any reason why i should/should not inform the govt clinic this background. maybe, they will offer us to do the check up in govt hospital. after the disease, my son has never had any flu or fever even after he had the immunization.
how's your son now? he should have taken low dosage of aspirin. how long did your paediatrician take before he could come up with his diagnosis?
My paediatrician told me that my son should not take immunization for 3 months and I saw from a HA pamphlet that immunization should be avoided for 6 months after taking gamma goblin. I dunno which is true.
I'll ask the govt clinic when I take him to do the 1-yr-old assessment next month.
Could you tell me if the govt clinic offer you to do follow-up checks?
my paediatrician also told me to defer the immunization schedule. i have taken his advice. but, when i took my son to see other paediatrician (when my own paediatrician was on leave) because of eczema, that paediatrician referred me to some reference material in his computer saying that there was no need to interrupt the immunization schedule. this paediatrician is dr. chiu wing. if i may recall correctly, my son had kawasaki in mid nov 2006 and he had resumed the immunization in january 2007at the advice of my own paediatrician. as i took my son to see dr. chiu in feb 2007, so it was already late to double-confirm with my own paediatrician. he completed all the immunization schedule and is expecting the one to be taken when he is 1 year old.
Will tell you if the govt hospital has offered us follow-up treatment.
