I agree with you that it's "lucky" to have a good helper......yeh, it's very often a matter of luck.
Anyway, I assume that you seldom talk to your helper before but still got a reasonable relationship. The lack of communication may make it difficult for the helper to trust you.
I would suggest you to step into her shoes before you start talking to her.......Imagine you are the helper, you feel uncertain, but dare not to ask the boss because she seldom talks to you. Sometimes, she tells her daughter that she is going to fire me ... :-(... how can you perform well and wear a happy face every day???? So, your want a definite answer to help yourself to plan for the future and peace your mind, even it is a "NO".
Back into reality ......by the time you tell her the "BAD NEWS", may be you should comfort her with the fact that there is a high demand in the HK market for good and experienced helper. In case she is willing to take care new born, then there shouldn't be any problem if she got a good reference. Even she doesn't want to take care of new born, there are still a lot of employers looking for good helpers.... If possible, offer her some other carrots such as "last day with flexibility"/"time-off to attend interview"/"allow her to give your phone no. to the potential employers" etc. However, you must think carefully whether you can really make these promises before offering them.
Hope this may be helpful to you.
