Dear All Well Covered Parents,

Thinking about taking a 5-6 week Family and Business Trip to HK between Dec 07 and Jan 08, I was wondering if any Well Planned Parents would like to share with me,

Which Travel Insurance you have taken/would take?

And the Cost involved?

(I have two Hungry boys, aged 4 & 8 and a wife that WILL KILL me if I reveal her AGE! Let's put the clock back and she's just 16 - when I first met her)

Many thanks.

No Basic Travel Cover from HSBC HK Visa Gold

Hi Veron and Other Planning to Travel Parents

I did make an Overseas Call to HSBC HK Visa Gold on the same morning, and selected the English Version.

I asked one simple question only,

"I have a HSBC HK Visa Gold card, and am considering using it to buy air tickets. Just would like to know if HSBC HK Visa Card will Automatically provide me the Basic Travel Insurance Cover."

And I had to repeat the same simple question very very slowly 3 times before the answering officer seemed to understand what I was trying to say!!!

And one simple simple question had took me almost 15 minutes and still did NOT have a simple answer right away.

He felt embarrassed too and in the end he asked for my Australian Number and asssured me he would call me back.

And he did,

"No. HSBC HK Visa Gold does not provide any Automatic Travel Insurance Cover."

There has been concerns from the Senior Management in HK over many years, complaining that it is hard to get any quality staff.

Now, just judging from this incident, I totally agree with their concern. The officer does NOT have up to standard Oral (Very Borken) English, nor up to standard professional knowledge (not even know the basic information of the product he's selling)

The sign is NOT good, HK has been losing its Competitiveness over the years, because there is a "Mentality Issue" amongst the Younger Generation.

To us, the Older Generation, well should be, Not So Young Generation, we often try to Prepare our Best before/after Work and Try/Perform our Best when at Work.

Thanks for Reminding

Hi Veron

It's nice to see you around.

I almost bought the tickets and booked the accomodation - but we now have to wait until 16 Oct - to ensure my wife has an "ALL CLEAR" first. (I don't think any one will enjoy their holiday with an Uncertainty hanging in their Head!)

Yes, you're right - everyone should make the most of their Plastic Card!

Although I almost bought tickets with my UK Gold Visa when in NZ, I didn't in the end because the Gold Visa providing only Basic Cover - NOT even covering the overseas accomodation cost in case of flight cancellation.

Since now I've another one - a HSBC Gold Visa (issued by HSBC HK), its terms may be different from the UK one, may provide more cover - will follow up later this morning.

Veron, would you mind sharing with me which Gold Card you'd used to cover your trip?

Thanks for Your Reminding.

Cheers

Hi Fate,
Have u buy your tickets to HK yet? Because as I know, if you use gold visa card to purchase the air-ticket, then you will have free travel insurance.

Thanks,

Just want to be Safe

Hi Devlin Mum

Thanks for your Concern.

The GP actually did not find anything wrong.

That's why he'd suggested my wife to consult a Consultant ONLY if she wished. Also, my wife felt less painful than a few days ago.

I was the one insisted she had to see a Consultant - just on the Safe side.

That's why I was thinking about having a Gathering sometime next week - kind of Distraction!

Have a Healthy Weekend Outing!

There is always a Twist in Life

Hi Devlin Mum

We've visited Underwater World a few times already, as we tend to hide ourselves in the comforting Air-conditioning therein - the Queensland Summer Heat could be very very Intense! And of course, we all have a Family Pass too!

My Boys love the Monster of the Sea, the Seal Show and indeed the Sea Food (Deep Dried stuff)!

Good on your Hubby, helping whevever he could! Somehow, I do feel that John Howard is about time to go.

One could only wish Life is that Simple - there is another Twist in Our Lives.

Just when I was about to book the flights and our preferred Serviced Apartment, my wife told me she felt pain on her lower abdomen, so we had to reorganise our schedule.

She saw the GP last Sat, had a Scan on Mon and re-examined by the GP, who suggested she COULD be Referred to a Consultant if my wife wished to. So, we were at the Consultant's surgery on Tue, booked a Colonoscopy (i.e.Internal Check) on 16 October - everything happened so Fast!!

(And I've learnt so much about Medicare along the way and that's why I'd asked you about the PHI)

So, we MAY not visit HK this Dec - all depending on the outcome on 16 October.

My wife and I are comfortable with any other date we subsequently agree upon. She is a Full Time Mum, though thinking about learning driving again and may return Nursing later next year.

I'm not surprised about the stiffer citizenship requirement - every country has been making it harder!

Smart Choice for your PHI, it's obvious we're not eligible for it. Other than my wife is not in her perfect health at the moment, there is another reason for us to enquiry about PHI.

We'd previously received a letter from the Australian Government, advising us, the new immigrants, we are entitled to at least 20% Discount (in a way) if we take on a PHI WITHIN 12 months of being registered as eligible with Medicare - and the 12 month is soon to expire! (We came from NZ last Oct)

Time flies when one has young children!

Thanks for your valuable Feedback and stay in Touch.

Have another Relaxing Weekend.

Cheers

Hi Fate,

Your suggestion to visit Underwater World is great. I was there in 2000 on my first visit to Australia. We stayed in Mooloolaba, so Underwater World was one of the must visit places. Devlin has just learned star fish (he can only pronounce as ta), I'm sure it will be a lot of fun for him to touch a real star fish rather than his rubber bath toy .

Our problem though is with the looming Federal Election. In the coming 10 weeks or so (it's believed to be around late November to early December), my husband has offered to do voluntary work to man information stalls, door-knocking and distributing leaftlets etc during the weekends.

Our gathering will have to take place until you return from HK. I hope this is ok with you and your wife.

The new residence requirement is actually a lot harsher as PR's are now required to stay in Oz for 4 years (as opposed to 2 in 5 years) before they can apply for citizenship.

Our medical insurance is with Teachers' Union Health .... click here and we are covered under the Ultimate Choice package.

Have a great weekend,

Our Place? Could We Try?

Hi Devlin Mum

You're really Attention to Fine Details.

It apperas that pepole are better off now with 4 (instead of 5) year requirement.

My wife loves the idea of two families coming together. Because your boy's age reminds her the days we're in London, when our elder boy was at that age.

We're quite good at keeping children at table during meal time. Would you like to give us a try?

If you lot have the time and energy, we would like to invite your family to our apartment unit at Minyama, Sunshine Coast. (www.bluewaterpointresort.com.au).

And ideally, on a Weekday (i.e. when our boys are at school. Otherwise, with three boys running around at home, there may not be Peace!!)

AND BEFORE (Thursday) 25 Oct, after which we're to move to a new area (www.pelicanwaters.com) for our boys' new school (www.cs.qld.gov.au). Yes, another Fully Furnished Apartment Unit!

In preparing our move, we'll be donating quite a number of things (some in good conditions) to Charity, because we're to move by ourselves (not many things as we're currently in a Fully Furnished Unit).

You never know, there could be something free for you and/or your lovely boy!

And if you lot could come over during weekend only, could we suggest a visit to www.underwaterworld.com.au - an indoor fun place for children with air-conditioning and several shows.

NO PRESSURE - it's entirely up to you and your hubby.

Meanwhile, do you mind advising me which Firm you're with for your PMH?

Cheers

Hi Fate,

I'm under the old Residence Requirements - 2 years stay in 5 years with 12 consecutive months in the last year. The new system was implemented in July this year - 4 years residence including 12 months as a permanent resident and absences from Australia of no more than 12 months, including no more than three months in the 12 months before applying.

Devlin has no problem with long distance travelling as he's a car fanatic. He's happy as long as he can see cars on the way .... pointing out Ford, Holden, Audi etc.

Our problem, on the other hand, is that he doesn't have the patience to sit through a meal. When we dine out, 99%f the time would end up either my husband or I had to take him out to look at cars while the other one quickly finishes the meal.

To answer your last question, yes we have private insurance.

Cheers,

Different Flight Centre Offering Different Prices?

Hi Devlin Mum

After reading your latest Feedback, I went to have yet another look of the Brochure!

For up to 35 days, the cost will be A$540 (A$270 x2) for a Single Internationl Trip to Area 2 (i.e. including HK), still A$152 MORE than yours!!

So, it seems that Brisbane Flight Centre is prepared to have a lower profit margin, either hoping to boast the "Business Volume", or being forced by the stiff competition from other travel agents selling cheaper travel insurance.

Good on you, 6 months to go before "Singing the Song".

I'm not well aware of the "Emigration Prison" system, as we, being NZ Citizens, AUTOMATICALLY have the right to live in Australia Indefinitely.

It's a great idea our two families could come together for a lunch sometime, somewhere in Australia, but I've to discuss with my wife first - yes, she' the Boss.

Also, because both of us now are having self-imposed Healthier Diet, and our boys are not too keen staying in a car for an hour drive!

(That's why we 've been to Sunnybank/Fortitude Valley for Yam Chai about 6 times only for the last 12 months)

I'll com back to you on this.

Meanwhile, do youn happen to have taken the Option of Private Medical Health Insurance?

Thanks for Sharing.

Cheers

Hi Fate,

We bought the insurance through Flight Centre too. I was also taken back by the huge increment. Do bear in mind, though, that you'll be staying 8 days more than we did. It'll be interesting to ask Flight Centre for a quote for 34 days and check the difference. By the way, ours was a single trip insurance.

Thanks for your offer, I'll surely stay alert and look out for any family remotely resembling yours The downside is, I'll be staying put in Oz for the time being as I'm now in the last 6 months of my 移民監. I really want to get my citizenship ASAP as I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to vote in the upcoming Federal Election.

How about this ... should we bump into your family in Brissie, we'll shout you lunch, ok?

Have a good day,

Many Thanks

Hi Devlin Mum

It's very nice to hear from you again - especially to hear a Bargain Insurance from you!

I went to our local Flight Centre last Tuesday, enquiring about the flight costs to HK , and had a quick read of its Travel Insuracne Brochure. Wah! It'd cost our family of four a total of A$658 (A$329 per adult + 1 child under 21) for 42 days with NIL Excess!!!

That's A$270 MORE than Yours!!
(Even allowing some inflation adjustment after a year, the Difference is Exccessive!)

This could explain why some Travel Agents are so keen in Reminding customers to take the insurance from them! A HUGE profit margin!

After reading your Feedback, I read the Brochure in more details again, and made two really Interesting Discoveries.

First, your insurance firm is the SAME on the Brochure placed in the Flight Centre - Both are Vero!!!

Second, I would pay LESS for taking an Annual Multi Trip for Family (A$645 for up to 45 days PER Journey) than a One Off Singel Trip as above (A$658) EVEN in the SAME Brochure!!!!

And judging from your Experience, I could be MUCH BETTER OFF by taking Annual Multi Trip for Family DIRECTLY with Vero rather than through a Middleman like Flight Centre.

Many Thanks, Devlin Mum.

And if we pump into your family in HK by chance, we'll give you lot a nice Lunch!

Cheers
