Your output/advice will be very appreciated....

There isn't much issue of enrolling kids into school once you've decided which school zone you want to live. The best time will be settling down duringlate winter or early spring, so you have enough time to register with the school. Some well desired schools require a few month of utility bills as a proof of address.
If you are considering Sugar Land, that means the schools normally have a higher ratio of Asian and Indian student body, which also means the academic performance is more competitive. Generally speaking, lifestyle in Houston is laid back and relaxing. Personally I love Houston, despite the 8 month long of heat a year.
I'm sure you and your family will be fine since your family are in Houston. They will guide you along the way.

Houston is not bad. I lived there for many years. I am sure that your family can tell you more.
Have you applied for immigration?

That's if you live close to China Town, otherwise you will have to get a ride to the Senior Center yourself. My husband's grandmom always have senior activities to go, around 3 or 4 times a week. She's busier than us.

So true for retiring in HK...at least you don't have to drive to buy "bread" for breakfast. My mom ...

My parents refuse to retire in Houston, so they are in HK, which I think probably be more suitable for them. Relatives and friends, walking distance to grab a newspaper and have any meals, restaurants and convenience stores in every corner, no stairs but elevators in the building.
Like you said, having to drive just to get a bread is a hassle for old ppl, and that's IF they know how to drive.

Houston is a bit too hot and too humid. Overall, it is ok.

Interesting enough that we did not have hurricane last year. I'm more worry about flash flooding in certain areas and streets after heavy rain. Besides that, I really enjoy living in Houston.
However as for retirement, I think Hong Kong is the best place to be retired.
Great public transportation, well govt senior care, free and easy access to healthcare, low cost of helper (if needed).

I live in sugar land. Tornados are very rare. I think I have heard of a couple of more cases further south. Of course, I would worry more about flooding/hurricanes in Houston.

I don\'t think Houston is that good for retirement anyway given the heat and humidity.

...

Oh yeah, now I remember that. Was it in Sugarland? Or Pearland? This is an exceptional case which only happens once in a very long while in greater Houston area.
From my personal experience, I have been living in West Houston for over 15 years, have never came across with a tornado whatsoever. I would worry more about the heavy rain storm than tornadoes.

Thanks

Though I have friends living in Pearland, I'm not too familiar with the area myself. However, it definitely has a more affordable housing than Sugarland (First Colony).
If your job is near highway 288, you can put Pearland in your consideration too. Your husband can take 288 North to downtown. Bad traffic can be very frustrating if it takes more than an hour to drive each way everyday, maybe Stafford or Missouri City would be a good idea too. They are right next to Sugarland but have a much lower property tax rate.

Thanks
Most likely my hubby will work at the downtown area, and we will bear in mind for the bad traffic in Houston. My office is somewhere near South Freeway 77047.... with the good school and safe environment, we rather choose to suffer the bad traffic and rent a single family house in First Colony area... :)

How about Pearland? Do you know anything with this area?

Cheers,
IYY
