My husband is holding the british citizen passport and I have to give birth in the U.k., in order to get a U.K. passport for our baby. Anyone knows if I can give birth in the government hospital over there? How much it costs? Will the immigration officer allows me to enter the country of U.K. when I'm 36's weeks pregnant? Thanks!

我諗你想小朋友有BRISTISH PASSPORT, 係因為想佢係英國讀書可以平D, 係嗎??? 如果只係為去TRIP, HK PASSPORT已經好好用, 不過如果你係為左可以讀書平D, 甘我既SUGGESTION係, 你全家返去英國生活啦, 因為就算你個BB係同BRITISH PASSPORT, 但爸爸媽媽無係英國交TAX3年以上, 你個小朋友係唔可以俾LOCAL FEE既, 甘即係話, EVEN你個小朋友有BC, 但你地唔係英國生活, 根本就唔可以平學校, 同埋現在英國既入境好煩, 你最後可能只係浪費機票俾人彈返轉頭, 再加上你又無係呢度既GP檢查開, 咩RECORD都無, 甘生BB, 好危險架, 甘樣同個D自由行去香港生BB有咩分別, 仲有既係, 你如果想BB有英國PASSPORT, 你老公一定要返英國幫BB整BIRTH CERT. 同埋PASSPORT, 因為你本身唔係BC, 仲有你地既結婚証書, 如果你地無英國認可結婚証書, BB就算係英國出世都唔可以有BRITISH PASSPORT, 講真你自己本身又唔係係英國住開, 加上有唔太多朋友係度既話, 而你老公又唔係身邊, 甘既生活係好辛苦, 英國既生活係悶, 你自己諗清楚啦, 英國治安唔算非常好, 講真比香港差, 咩人都有, 如果得你自己同BB, 你攪得點嗎???

我老公係係返NHS既, NHS(英國政府醫院)唔一定要接你既CASE, 佢地唔一定會幫你架...萬一佢地唔幫你, 去PRIVATE係SUPER SUPER貴架, 比係HK可能要貴好幾倍, 如果你真係想係英國生,你要有打算可能要用上10萬, 剖腹生產可能仲要貴好多好多, 好多野都無得預計, 你自己要諗下如果有咩閃差, 你自己可以應付嗎??? 老實講, 我自己係英國讀書生活好多年架啦, 之後係度結婚生BB, 但如果你問我, 我都係覺得係香港生BB有多D屋企人係身邊開心好多, 生完BB心理同生理上有好多唔同,有屋企人係身邊好好多.

I'm afraid you don't understand what I am saying. First, without a valid dependent visa, the custom people won't even let you into the country, especially you'll be heavily pregnant (36 weeks) when you enter UK.

even if you've successfully entered UK, the first problem is to find a place to live, if you don't have a job, you won't find an accommodation, bcoz they will do a credit and background check on you, ie to check you UK bank record and see if you're working and have regular income, even if you have money in your hand, they will still do the same. if you live with your friends, then this will be easier,just change the name of one of the utility bills.

if you're lucky enough to have a proof of address, the clinic will also need to see if you're a resident of UK, if no visa, that means you can't register to see a GP, and no hospital will take you. Esp when you'll be 36weeks pregnant, most hospital are so busy that they won't even do any check up or let you have the baby there. In my case, we moved to a bigger place when I was 22 weeks pregnant, so had to find another GP and in the end took me 3 weeks to find another public hospital.

what i'm trying to say is what you're planning to do is just impossible.

if you're planning to take your kid to UK to study, just get a visa for him/her then, live there for a few years, he/she can still become citizen.

During the GP registration, they will check your proof of address AND passport to confirm your residency.

Thanks for your advice. Just want to ask u, u mean that yr daughter is still holding a british passport. But she need to live in HK for 7 yrs, then she becomes a permanent resident of HK, right? If register with GP, I can show them address proof, it's not a problem at all.

Actually, I'm planning to live in UK after my baby starts going to school but not now.

Do u think the government hospital will consider my case if I pay for it?? Do u know around how much?? Thanks.

as other sisters said, it's impossible for you to get a dependent visa for you to stay in UK. And the custom people are so strict these days...even if you have a dependent visa, they still question you for a few minutes. I used to hold a entry clearance visa/dependent visa when I lived in UK with my husband. BTW, just want to tell yo one thing, from my experience, my daughter was born in a UK public hospital 2 years ago, so she holds a british passport, if she wants to live in HK, she needs to get a dependent visa, and after she lives in HK for 7 years, then she can become a HK citizen, this is true bcoz we've tried to apply permanent resident status for her and failed, they said the HK immigration rules has changed after 97...it's so much hassle that she's not born in HK, if we knew it the first place, we would have fly back to HK and given birth to her.

anyway, when I registered for a GP, theydidn't ask for NI, all they need to see it proof of address, and I didn't get my NI until I apply for my british citizenship, and if you're not planning to work in UK, they won't even consider your case.

I think private hospital is your only choice.

if you haven't got dependent visa, I doubt it if GP will register you.
giving birth in private hospital will be your ONLY option.

原來你講極仲未明???

一開始你都未去GP登記, 醫院都未冇你紀錄, 你又何來可以去公立醫院生呢??? 英國制度就是這樣的.

其實你應該想一想, 放棄吧!

In my situation, I think depentent visa is difficult for my to apply. As my husdard is'nt work or live in uk. Is there any other option? To rent a place for staying in uk isn't a problem, becasue my relative in uk will arrange everything for me before I come to uk.

On the other hand, I have already obtained the information from the private hospital. It is very expensive. Talking about 9000 pound for the whole maternity services. If I really give birth in government hospital, how much does it cost? Do anyone know?

正如sbever 所講, 你首先要去英國領事館申請 Dependent Visa, 咁你先可以响英國居留 (唔係旅遊). 有Visa 去登記GP 應該OK, 登記GP無需要有NI number, 但係地址証明就可能要, 因為始終搵GP 係按照你住個區去登記. 嚴格黎講, 好似去銀開户口咁, 地址証明係要有你名嘅utlity bill (水費、council tax bill.....). Airline 限制就每間有少少唔同, 你自己check 清楚.

我既NHS MEDICAL CARD, 係係HOSPITAL REG. 架, 無問過我NI, 不過係7年前, 同埋當時我仲係STUDENT, 不過都無用學生証PROOF, 我有個朋友程況差唔多, 只要你有dependent visa, 甘你就可以申請nhs medical card, 唔一定要有nI 架, 但係係NHS免費Services 係需要住係英國已經over 3個月, 如果少過呢個日子, 就算有nhs card, 都要自己pay, 因為你老公係BC 2代, BB一定要係英國出世先可以係BC, 不過你地本來唔係住係UK, 甘如果你要 stay 係uk , 你就要有dependent visa 丫, 但你老公又無係uk工作, 我諗幾難申請visa.

I"m much concern about the UK custom may give you hard time if you are not the UK passport holder, they will doubt the purpose you entry UK, also you are pergnancy. They may refuse you entry or only allow you stay for a short period. So pls well arrange.

true, airline do allow pregant lady to travel up to 36 weeks, but if airline is in doubt if uk will allow you enter the country, they can refuse to carry you.
as you are not holding UK passport, that means you are only a vistor, it's hard to explain to the officer you are only coming to "visit" the country when you are just 4 weeks away from giving birth.

You need your own NI to get registered, your husband's NI is not going to be helpful. But like what twingirls said, neither of you haven't paid any NI, why do you come here to give birth...
Travelling by 36 weeks by air is very risky as it is 12+hr flight. Many of my UK colleagues will fly back to UK to give birth latest by 28 weeks. Do not over-estimate your strength.

not to say whethe u can register with a GP without NI or proof of address.
are u sure u can rent an apartment in time when u arrive?
assumed u found an apartment before arriving uk, u still have to wait for few weeks before u get any proof of address.
also a lot of agent need reference letter or other proof on order to rent an apartment. so u have to make sure u have all the info needed before hand,

as twingirl said, its getting more and more difficult to register with GP given the large amount of immigrant at the moment.

Also I am not so sure re the self referral to hospital unless its private hopsital.. now hospital is very busy, I heard some cases, even the british people who been having all the regular check up throughout the pregnancy, they still turn them away as there no space in the maternity ward. so I am not sure how likely they will accept yr self referral.

i am really sorry that I could not give u more info re this issue.
if u are really keen on having yr bb in uk, I would suggest u to arr uk asap and not wait till Aug. also make a contingency plan to give birth in private hospital in case things didn;t work out the way u want.

現在好多醫院都好嚴架啦，咁遲才登記，真的好難講架，好多GP都爆啦，好多新搬來的都唔可以登記了..............

I heard from the others that some hospitals dont even check your NI number but of course some do. I am wondering in case they dont check his NI number and we can provide address proof to the hospital. Do you think this works??

How long did your husband study in UK?? As I knew that, it must study for 10 yrs to apply to be Birtish Citizen.

I knew airline just allow pregnant lady by plane when they are before 7 mths pregnant. Then as you said that your husband and you haven't work in UK, and haven't NI, that means you both haven't pay tax.....................so how do you gave birth in UK without pay the fee?

almaly n pigpig78.. thanks for yr info. Actuall, my due date is in Oct and i'm planning to go there in Aug. I've also heard that I can do a self referral to the hospital if it's not enough time for me to visit the GP. Is that true?

Also, my husband wasn't born in U.K. but he used to study there for few yrs. By the time he was there, he didn't get the NI number. Then he went back HK for work. Now I 'm pregnant and we plan to get a british citzenship for our baby, that's why I plan to give birth in U.K. Maybe I ll go to live there with my baby when the baby starts going to school(but not planning to live there at this stage).

I've checked with the British consulate and they told me there is no such VISA(to give birth in UK) to apply. But of course I can give birth in UK because my husband is British passport holder.

For my situation, what u guys think is the way for me
to do??? Of course it will be better if i dont have to pay to give birth there la... But it wouldn't be a problem to get and address proof because I'm not going to live with our relatives n I'm planning to rent an apartment there. .. thanks!
