Dear Health Conscious Parents

I recently saw an article in ourlocal newspaper, www.thedaily.com.au, reporting that the Number of people die of Blood Cot Related Disease, e.g. Stroke (due to High Cholestrol Level) in Australia Every Year =

the TOTAL of people die of Breast Cancer + Bowel Cancer + All Traffic Accidents!!

I almost became one of them. My Life was at High Risk. And I spent a total of 4-month Fighting for My Life, trying my best to Lose Cholesterol and, Thank God, I made it!

Let's all go back to the Beginning.

After noticing there were two small spots on each corner of my eyes in last September, my nursing wife strongly suspected I had a Health Issue and therefore urged me to see a GP.

She was Right - I had a Problem, a Serious Problem. The GP arranged me for a Blood Test, confirming I had a Very High Level of Cholestrol - 6.4! (Should be at or below 5.4)

The GP could have put me on Medicine right away, but he kindly gave me 2-month time to reduce my Cholestrol Level.

Worrying my two Young Boys become Orphans, I immediately changed my Eating Habit :-

- Dropped the Bacons, Sausages, Eggs, Chicken Skins, Belly Pork etc;

- NO More Chocolate & Ice Cream;

- Changed Full Cream Milk to NO Fat, NO Cholestrol Milk;and

- Have One More Fruit (i.e. Two altogether) a Day.

Two months later, I returnd to see my GP and the Blood Test showing my Cholestrol Level dropped by 10% to 5.9!

But the GP stated it was still High and I had to try harder, and I was given another 2-month time.

And this time, I was Very Worried, because something was scheduled to happen for the coming two months that could make me Harder to stick to my Strict Diet.

Does any parent would like to guess what event was to happen?

Cheers

Finish What I started

Dear Staying Healthy Parents

Before leaving BK, I've to finish what I've started.

My neigbbour, she is about 60, retired and one day suddenly all her muscles NOT functioning, sat there and asked her husband to help. She was later in a coma and rushed to hospital, staying in ICU for a week initially.

She has been taken Cholestrol Lowering Drug for the last 3 years. And according to her husband, there is like 1 in 10,000 chance of someone having severe side effects of the Drug. In normal circumstance, it is acceptable to have about 200 "Toxins" in a patient's blood, but hers is about 14,000 "Toxins", that is, 70 time higher than the acceptable range!

She eventually woke up but back home on a wheelchair. But was then rushed to hospital again and almost lost her life a few days ago.

This incident has reminded us the Vital Importance of having Good Eating Habit.

In an ideal situation, we should have

Good Eating Habits + Good Exercising Habits + Good Sleep to keep us all Alive & Energetic!

Bye.

Cheers

The End of My Journey in Baby Kingdom

Dear Confusing Australian Parents

Trust that you all are as Confused as me,

"Why this HK parent running around in EVERY Fate's thread and doing the same thing like this?"

Please read my recently open thread in "International School" with title,

"Searching the Best School in the world."

See what you would make of this. Who is Respectable and Who is NOT. It appears that someone is "TRAPPED WITH HATTRESS."

Could I take this Opportunity to thank you all for being so Quietly, Patiently and Positively Involved for the last year or so, making me feel like Australia is also my home.

But, it's just that now is about time to say Goodby and tell you all WHY.

I'm to write my LAST thread with the following title and published here in Australian Parents Club, as my Last Salute to you all Well Behaved Parents & Friends,

Hi Fate,

I do agree that oat may reduce cholesterol. That's why my husband and I get used to drinking oat meal "without milk" and "without sugar" every morning. Then, we will find a good restaurant nearby and share half of breakfast.

Personally I think the boiling type is much more tasty than the instant type. Try to cook by yourself next time.

All "bran" products are also good for intestine.

Regarding tomato, I do have some research too. If you eat too much, it will cause "濕毒". Therefore, if you are HEPATITES B carrier, don't eat much.

Take care,
chingyu

Another Healthy Food

Dear All Patient Australian Parents

Have been busy lately because of the school holiday (have to keep my boys busy) and my recently started thread in the "international school" section. (Now, I really appreciate HOW PATIENT you lot have been)

The other Great Healthy Food that has kept my Cholesterol down is:

Oat!

Knowing that I'm lazy, my wife then buys me the Instant Oat, just put the power in a cup, pouring in hot water and stir, that's it! (But taste better if left to stand for a few minutes as it gets thicker)

Come back with my neighbour next time.

Another Great Food

Dear All Exercising Hard to Be Healthy Parents

Before moving onto my Australian Neighbour, I think I should go back to my recent trip in HK first.

So, with only two weeks left in HK, I started & kept eating a tomato (Yes, NOT an apple) a day.

I continued the eating habit even after I'd returned Australia around the late Jan 08.

But, since I had only two weeks left before the Blood Test, I started eating another Great Food to ensure my Cholestrol Level be at the Targeted Level.

And indeed, it worked!

The Final Blood Test confirming my Cholesterol Level dropped by (roughly) another 10%, from 5.9 to 5.5 - that's only 0.1 above my Targeted level of 5.4.

My GP was Happy, reminding me to keep up the good efforts, ops......, should be the Good Diet!

Does any parent woul like to guess what the "Another Great Food" was?

Cheers

Further Reading makes Better Understanding

Hi chingyu

First, the Two problems in trying to get Tomato Juice whilst I was in HK.

I checked the contents and noticed there was a High level of Sodium (i.e. salt) in the Juice. Also, the Tomato Juice was sold in a large container, like 5 litre package. (And I was hoping to find something like a 250 ml Vitasoy drink!)

So, because of Unhealthy and Inconvenience, I went straight back to Tomato rather than its Juice!

Then, the "Salmonellae Outbreak in USA's Tomatoes" - this is the Classical example of the Danger in Reading Headline only.

In the past, we had a "Headline",

"Chlorine in Swimming Pool would raise the chance of Asthma"

Some parens then panicked and stopped their children from swimming. But if one read more details, they would be in a better position to make a better decision.

The Chloride will ONLY form a New Substance if there is Urine and Sweat in the pool water.

This means if every swimmer has a quick shower before entering the pool like the Germans do and ensure taking their young children to toilet before it's too late, there should NOT be a Major problem.

An Australian Olympic Swimming Team Member, who's also Asthmatic, has stressed that,

"The Actual Benefits that Swimming has given me Outweighted its Potentail Risks"

Another example is the "Headline",

"250 Queenlanders die of Skin Cancer Every Year"

But, remember, many of those are "White" People, spending hours and hours, almost naked in the beaches reading books!!

Now, back to the Tomato Issues.

I read the NY Times the day I read your feedback, confirming there were people being rushed into hospitals because of eating Tomato, though noone died as a result. And MacDonald's, Starbuck etc. had since pulled Tomato off from their menus.

But, I also confirmed that NO all Tomatoes in USA had a problem. Some of them like Cherry Tomato, tomato with vines etc. were NOT effected.

More importanly, confirming the "Salmonellae" is mainly found in the Intestines of animals, meaning that the Tomatoes in question had been Contaminated by Animals' Faeces!

That's why I always WASH the "Skin" of Apples, Pears....and Tomato with a mild washing liquid First!

So, I've been alright with my Tomato eating habit.

Next time, I'm to provide more details about my neighbour's Health Problem, even though she has been on Cholesterol Control Medicine for the last 3 years!

Cheers

Just Back

Dear Quietly Reading & Openly Responding Parents

Our family just back from our 6-day Gold Coast Holiday.

It was nice to meet up with another BK parent, ALAU. Her 1-year-old boy is so Cute and her husband is so Generous - giving us two Free Yam Chai, one in Gold Coast & one on our way back to Sunshine Coast.

Yes, the Lau's Family followed us all the way back to Sunshine Coast, staying at Pelican Waters and it's only Fair that we gave them back some Free meals!

Since we have to catch up with all these letters, calls, E Mails and bills after our recent absence from home (and the washing!), I've to come back and respond at a later time.

Enjoy the school holiday.

The Final Question

Dear Healthy Eating Parents

The 3rd & Final Question I was meant to ask chingyu was,

"Do you know How Much 30 gm really is?"

Does any parent know?

I'd a quick check before, comfirming a pack of MacDonald's Tomato Sauce is 20 gm. So, 30 gm roughly equals to a Medium Sized Tomato ONLY!! That 's it!

This means :

- I'm NOT asking parents to eat Tons of Tomato!
(Anything Too Much is Harmful)

- I'm NOT asking parents to eat something Unusual!
(NOT from the Highest Mountain or the Deepest Sea)

- I'm NOT asking parents to eat something Expansive!
(NOT "Bow", "Sum", "Chi" or "To")

- I'm NOT asking parents to eat Tomato ONLY!
(NOT giving up other healthy food)

I'm only reminding parents to eat something that has been eaten for generations, proved to be nutritious and proved work on my High Cholesterol Level.

Next time, I'll respond to chingyu's point about the "Salmonellae Outbreak in USA's Tomatoes".

Cheers

Question 2

Dear Health Conscious Parents

Last time, I'd highlighted the Problems :-

- in Defining a "Balanced Diet" in Details; and
- NOT Everyone Having Enough Time to let the "Balanced Diet" to work through.

This time, I'm to asnwer the 2 nd Question I was meant to ask chingyu,

"Are we all having Healthy Diet at the moment?"

The answer is most likely (and Sadly), "NO".

Because being a Chinese, we are most likely ALREADY growon up all these Unhealthy Food :-

- Salty Fish
- Chinese Sausage
- All Seasoned Vegetables
- "Fu Yu"
- Ginger and Spring Onion Chicken (just look at the oil in the sauce!)
- Carb Meat, Scallop, King Prawn etc.
- Roast Duck, BBQ Pork & Belly Pork (i.e. "Siu Yuk")
- All these Instant and Cup Noodlels
- the M - MacDonalds etc. etc.

And of course, all these sauces. Remember, a few years ago, the HK reporters discovered how the Mainland Chinese extracting protein from the "Hair" to make the Soya Sauce!!!

We are always eating Unhealthy Food from the start.

And very often the ONLY time we start thinking about a Healthy Diet is because there is something Wrong has happened, either to our own health or to our friend/relative/colleague's health.

The Focus, to me, is NOT Just Balanced in terms of how much calories, how much fat, how much....etc.

But, also if not more in terms of How Frequent.

I personally believe as long as we are NOT having the above Too Often AND in Large Quantity, that is, EATING IN MODERATION, we should be O.K.

Hope the above help.

(And next time, I'm to answer my 3rd and the Final Question)

Cheers

Appreciate

Hi chingyu

I think many parents, like me, Appreciate you raising the point of "Balanced Diet".

You've made me realised of the need to bring up Three Points AND explain them in details.

Yours is obviously Common Sense NOT Nonsense.

But it's just that "Balanced Diet" takes time to work, and there are many High Cholesterol Sufferers just do NOT have the Luxury of Time.

Answer to 1st Question

Dear All Trying Their Best to Stay Healthy Parents
(For some could be Trying to Stay Alive!)

The reason that I've asked chingyu Three Questions is :

Ensure you lot have a Better Understanding of my Points.

The First Question,

"What Exactly is a Balanced Diet?"

Over the years, we often heard the following answers to the following questions :-

Q1 : How are we going to encourage Teenagers NOT to Smoke/to Exercise More/to Care Others More etc.?

A1 : To Educate them.

(The Problem is : HOW to do it?

How do we get the Teenagers come to listen in the first place?

How do we ensure they will stay attentive during the Whole presentation?

How do we...................................etc,etc.?)

Q2 : If we are worried about our Health, what should we do?

A2 : Talk to your GP.

(But the Reality is some GPs may say,

"It is too early to make any conclusion now. Just come back when you've a serious problem."

But when you indeed have a serious problem, some GPs may say,

"Why did you NOT come early, the problem is TOO Big now!")

The above is NOT a joke, it DID happen!

So, the term "A Balanced Diet , I'm sorry to say, may be Too Vague and is NOT good enough in Itself for those now Fighting for their Life (like I was) - they have ONLY Limited Time to put thing Right. - their Life is on the line.

Next time, I am to answer the 2nd Question I was meant to put to chingyu.

Cheers

Three Questions

Hi Big (Love) Mother Chinyu

Nice to see you around and trust that your Little Girl has been Happy as ever.

You're right. I did not check yesterday's newspapre (www.on.cc, www.singtao.com or www.singpao.com) because I was extremely busy in :-

- Considering my elder boy teacher's invitation to organise a Chinese Writing Class for the Year 4 Students, after my boy had presented some Chinese Writing on Thursday and his 19 classmates loved it. (Every student has to present a talk in front of the whole class once every two weeks);

- Also Considering teaching all 20 students to each perform a Chinese Marial Art (e.g. 5 Animals, 4 Emotions, 3 Weapons and 2 Surprises etc.) for their Term 3 Perfomance with the Theme "A Touch of China" in welcoming the Summer Beijing Olympic (Each term, each class has to do a performance for their parents);

- Enjoying swimming with my boys in our heated pool, helping them to fight off their Suspected Asthma & Ezcema; and above all

- Comforting my neighbour as his 60-year-old(?) retired wife has been admitted into ICU for a week after suffering Acute Muscles Mulfunctioning due to,

yes, High Cholestrol!!! (More details later on)

So, I did NOT have the luxury to read HK newspaper yesterday as I normally do.

Before responding to the points you've raised, would you be kind enough to answer Three Questions.

Ready?

First,

(To you) What EXACTLY is a "Balanced Diet"?

Please define for the sake of Every Health Conscious Parent.

Cheers

Hi Slim Fate,

Do you know the headline of newspaper yesterday?

Hong Kong has been hit by a double food scare after New Zealand banned exports of tomatoes and the United States announced an outbreak of salmonella linked to the fruit.

City supermarkets have pulled New Zealand tomatoes off their shelves because of the discovery of a new disease- causing bacteria in the country.

Besides, eating grapefruit also causes high risk of breast cancer. I think a balanced diet is more appropiate because we never know which food is the best for our bodies.

Have a happy dragon-boat festival day!

Best regards,
chingyu
