I think it depends on the context.both work but it should be corrected to \"I would have planned\" and \"instead of getting/buying a cake\" which the teacher\'s right about.

唔知老師條問題点問。

但有2個可能性。。。

1)

Teacher : " If you are going to plan a birthday... who will you plan it for"
Student : " If I am going to plan a birthday, I will.... "

2)

Teacher : " If you were to plan a birthday.... who would you plan it for... "
Student : " If I were to plan a birthday I would plan..... "

都唔覺有錯。佢可能諗住唔整旦糕 (可能阿媽唔鐘意食), 所以整 cupcake. 完全冇諗過買。如果佢係咁既意思，佢可以寫 ...

但咁寫好 redundant 。

仲之完全未聽過。。。" If I am to plan... "
