I have 2 babies and both of them have eczema. In the past years, I have talked to different doctors and read a lot of articles just to find out more. Eventually, eczema is already in the gene since the baby's formed in the mother's body. So, if you or your husband's family has a history of eczema, your baby has high potential to have that. Many of my husband's family members have eczema or food allergy including him. Both my babies started to have eczema since a few months old. Here are my tips to share: -
1) Take care of it soon before it gets worse. I did not want to apply steroid cream on my babies at the beginning but the pedi doctors told me that it would worsen the situation and end up using a stronger steroid cream later. So, use it if the doctor considers it necessary for your baby.
2) Apply cream often on baby's skin. I put cream on my babies every time I changed their diapers and after a bath.
3) Do not use hot water for bathing the baby. When the weather's cold, I would heat up the room by turning on the heater first to avoid them catching a cold.
4) Little soap for baby, choose the one without fragrance, J&J causes allergy for my babies.
5) Only use cotton, no polyester, flush...not just the clothing but also bed sheets and blankets.
5) Use laundry detergent only suitable for babies. Separate baby's clothes with yours, do not wash them at the same time in the washing machine. I even hand washed my babies' clothes in the first year.
6) Keep the house clean and good in air ventilation.
7) Do not overdress the baby as he will stratch when he's hot.
8) Check if your diet affect the baby's eczema. The most common food that trigger eczema including egg, milk (cow's milk), wheat, red meat, seafood, hot & spicy food, peanuts, MSG, seasoning, liquor...You can take reference of the advices of the other moms' feedback here.
Usually, baby can outgrow from it when he grows older or at least improve a bit. My son is now 3 and his eczema is better than before but we still watch him on his diet and change his bedsheet, blanket often. My daughter who is a 100% breastfed baby has a mild eczema instead. I believe that breast milk really help on delaying or lower the effect of allergy.
