Avoid using the brake in icy condition. Even though I have good experience driving in winter conditions, I did it once and the car lost control. I was driving something like 20km/hr at that time.
Wah, 40 euro + 10 euro, it's really expensive if you just overspeed below 10km/h ...
By the way, last year i rented a car in Munich and returned it in Frankfurt. There was no one way rental fee. If you fly in one country and fly out from another, it may be cheaper to rent two cars and change near the border. Many years ago I flew in Madrid and returned from Rome. I rented a car in Madrid, drove all over Spain and Portugal and returned it in Barcelona. Then I took a train to Montpelier, France and rented a car there. I returned that car at the Geneva Airport (French side) and went through French and Swiss immigration. I then rented a car in the Swiss side of the Geneva airport and returned it in Lugano. From Lugano I used public transport all the way to Rome. I needed not pay one way fee in all three rentals.
Snow tires are basically tires offering better traction than regular tires. They are safer than regular tires in snowy and icy conditions. In areas with cold winter people usually put on winter tires, i.e., snow tires, during winter months. of course you can drive with them for a long time.
Many car rental offices do not have automatic. Even if they do, the charge is much higher. I rented stick-shifts in Europe, and it is a pain driving in the city.
Two years ago I was driving from Gents, Belgium to Harlaam, the Netherlands. I was photoed near Rotterdam without my knowing it. I actually went over the speed limit by less than 10 km/hr. Two months later my credit card was charged by the car rental company for over 40 Euros. The ticket was sent to the car rental company. The charge was something like 10 euros but the car rental company charged me a hefty administrative fee!
I have rented cars in 5 different trips to Europe. If you rent and return the car within the same country, even to a different location, you need not pay one way rental fee.
I would not recommend driving anywhere in Europe in the winter.
