We will go to 福岡 in July and would love to go to 阿蘇 if possible. Is it easy to go??

Mostly we are planning to take the JR and then rent a car. Should we stay in 阿蘇 for 1 night? or even more? Going to the 火山 seems fun. Can we ride horse there?

Would you suggest us to go to any other cities or places? I would surely stay in 福岡 for some nice shopping (outlet too!!!)
As we have an active girl, we would go to the Space world or even the disaster museum too.

Anyone who can share some experience or suggestion with me? Thanks a lot!

You are right that I might go to the 九州能源館 first. Of course we won't arrive 防災館 too late. I even think of skipping Robosquare if the time is really too limited. I know my daughter would like to play at the beach more.
Going to the beach later is good to avoid the strong sun as well! :)
I am trying to plan going to Donki on that night if possible! So a day pass is a must! :)

Walking from 薬院大通 is feasible. It is not far. (5 minutes? on foot)

You may want to go to the 九州能源館 in the morning first as the other attractions are close to each other. Then you can take the subway to 西新. From there it is about a 10 minute walk to 防災館. I would say arriving in 防災館 no later than 2 or 2:30 pm as it has an earlier closing time. From 防災館 it is another 5 minutes on foot to Robosquare. I believe Robosquare is closing at 6pm. (Check its website for sure). The beach area has no closing time so it can be the last to visit.

A day pass maybe worthwhile if you are taking more than 3 trips.

how about going there after going to Robosquare, 防災館 and the Mairzon beach area??
Do you think it would have enough time?
Is it easy to go from that area?? (walk from薬院大通??)

A couple of hours would be good enough, plus 1 hour round trip from Hakata station (23 min one way). The Tenjin district is mid-way, you may want to stop there for shopping and/or visit the Sweets Paradise.

My sons like that place. There are some interactive games as well as a maze in complete darkness. There is a similar one in Mei Foo but the one in the Energy Pavilion is free.

I must spare a whole day for meeting 2 Japanese friends so time seems to be a bit tight. Can just choose the best place to visit. (and my husband and daughter stated that Sweets paradise is a must already! haha)

There is a bus going to 九州エネルギー Energy館 from Hakata Station, stopping right in front of the pavilion. You can use google map (direction with the bus icon) to find the information.

I agree! They are not trust worthy even it is a big well-known one! I just feel angry that they treat me as a fool!
I found out the staffs are not that professional. I would rely on myself from now on.

I like to plan the family vacation. Then everything would be under my control. Moreover, I have more time to do the studies and research. My husband is too busy for it. He trusts my plans and rely on me. :)

but I will ask for his opinion when I need to choose a hotel.

Thanks. I also found this company in the book. I have contacted them before and they gave me quick response. Once the hotels are confirmed, I would make the booking.
but I agree that i should try different sites for the better price. :)
I plan to rent and return the car at the same spot. Mostly about 36 hours.

Many travel agents are not trust worthy, and some don't know enough to give a sound advice. I always rely on myself.

I find it really amazing that in this site it is usually the ladies who plan for family vacation. I have known a lot of backbackers for many years (I am one myself too) and they always plan their own trip, regardless of their gender.

To rent a car in Japan you may try:

or go to the Mazda (the name of the car rental company changed on Apr 1 I can't remember exactly its new name, something like easy rental) and Nissen sites directly. It may be worthwhile to compare price of the different sites, especially if you are not returning your car to the same locatiion. Recently I rented a car with Mazda, picking up at Fukui and returning at Komatsu Airport. The Mazda site said no one way charge (and that was the case) but the Tocoo site indicated a one way charge.

I am very disappointed to the travel agency this time. I think they didn't sent our request at once. (or they might do it via some other middle- agency!!!) The staff also used some stupid excuse to cover their problems!! For example, they want to imply that it is the problem from the hotel! Suddenly he would say the hotel didn't contact them about our reservation and then he said he knew the hotel had confirmed after I asked him more... keep on telling lies!!!
They also isn't willing to make any changes.
I think I won't ask for their help anymore even it is cheaper.

Here is totally different! I am the forever vacation planner, from where to go, how to access, how long we would stay at a spot.... My husband would just beg me not to have a tight schedule! haha
Sometimes I would plan him to a place and I am at the other place if necessary.

I believe my daughter would want to go there again and again after the first try! hehe
gaining a few pounds is ok when we are in the holiday! :) Eating is a must for vacation!

It seems really attractive to have all included with that price!! Very reasonable!

I also buy packages, but mainly from the airline-affiliated entities. JAL is the best because you can get instant confirmation. ANA requires you to buy from one of its contracted travel agencies.

I have always been the family vacation planner. My wife always complains that my pace is too fast but she never plans.
