HONG KONG, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Shares of Esprit Holdings Ltd <0330.HK> rose 11.3 percent to a record high on Thursday, a day after the fashion chain posted a better-than-expected 50 percent rise in second-half earnings. Shares of Esprit were set to open HK$11.8 higher at a record high of HK$116.50. Europe-focused Esprit on Wednesday reported a second-half net profit of HK$2.8 billion, up from HK$1.86 billion a year ago, according to Reuters calculations from previously reported figures, thanks to robust sales and a strong euro, but credit woes are casting doubt on the outlook for consumer spending even as the world's fifth biggest fashion retailer expands globally. The fashion retailer booked a 39 percent rise in its annual profit to HK$5.2 billion, beating an average forecast of HK$4.8 billion according to 15 analysts polled by Reuters Estimates. Esprit -- which sells everything from bath towels to shoes -- recorded turnover growth of 27 percent to HK$29.6 billion for the year, of which more than 80 percent came from Europe. (US$1=HK$7.8) |
