My maid arrived on Feb 20. I told her to buy bathing shampoo at Wellcome and I would pay for it. She could share our liquid soap as I said my shampoo and conditioner was too expensive to be shared with her. The next day she bought a HK$40 shampoo! Then I said to her "I will pay for it this time but next time I won't provide any more".
The more freedom you give them with your money, the less they care about it...
Since then she is using her own tooth paste/tooth brush etc. My house rules say that all personal toiletries, lotion etc. should be borne by herself.
