We will go to 福岡 in July and would love to go to 阿蘇 if possible. Is it easy to go??
Mostly we are planning to take the JR and then rent a car. Should we stay in 阿蘇 for 1 night? or even more? Going to the 火山 seems fun. Can we ride horse there?
Would you suggest us to go to any other cities or places? I would surely stay in 福岡 for some nice shopping (outlet too!!!)
As we have an active girl, we would go to the Space world or even the disaster museum too.
Anyone who can share some experience or suggestion with me? Thanks a lot!
My daughter wants to go to 別府 too (due to an old theme park) but I guess we should only choose one city outside 福岡.
Would 別府 or 阿蘇 better??
where will you go?? HOw long will you be there? Is it a must to change hotels??
My daughter wants to go to 別府 too (due to an old theme park) but I guess ...
I will go for 6 days only and will drive by ourselves. I will go to both 別府and阿蘇. Therefore, we must change hotel. Some people will stay at 熊本市 and drop by 阿蘇but I will stay there as I am attracted by the hotspring hotel 野の花の宿 阿蘇の四季 and its dinner set. I am not interested in 熊本市at all.
For the old theme park, do you mean the Kijima Amusement Park with the wooden roller coaster? We may go there too as both my daughter and me are roller coasters manic!
In the summer there are firework shows all over Japan. You can keep an eye on the schedule (can be found by google) and find one to see near you. There are two very good ones in Fukuoka and Kurume (15(?) minutes by shinkensen from Fukuoka but I think they are in the first week in August. (At least it was the case in 2011)

Yes, I am meaning that theme park. Not sure it is worth to go or not. I am thinking of staying at the Aso Farm Village.
Maybe should drive in that area if I also want to go to the volcano?
Thanks for your info!! :) It would be great if it is easy to access to Aso by train! I also believe seeing the volcano would be very impressive!!! That's why we would love to go there. I want to take the cable car too!!!
would you recommend me to stay in Aso for 1 night or 2??
I went on a day trip, so I don't have information on staying in Aso. By the way I just added a photo of 草千里 where you can ride a horse.
In 2011 I stayed in Kumamoto for 5 nights (Aug 1-Aug 6), taking day trips to Aso, Hitoyoshi, Nagasaki and Kagoshima. I also went to Fukuoka and Kurume on 2 evenings to see the fireworks. I used a JR pass then.
In Spring 2012 I toured around Fukuoka (2 nights) Sasebo (2 nights), Kokura (1 night) and took day trips to Beppu, Mojiko and Huisdenbosch, before going to Shikoku and Sanin for a week, then i returned to Fukuoka and stayed there for another 2 nights.
All the places I mentioned about, with the exception of Huisdenbosch (which i think is overpriced), are well worth for visiting.
Are all the roller coaster too exciting? My daughter is 8 and she loves playing roller coaster. but if they are too exciting... I wonder who can play with her!! ><
any "mild" rides inside??
By the way, there are a few places in Fuluoka that are fun for kids and they are free:
九州能源館 (九州エネルギー Energy館): http://www1.kyuden.co.jp/life_pavilion_enekan_index
The pavilion has excellent exhibits and many interactive games.
福岡市民防災中心(http://www.fuku-bou.or.jp/),
You can experience earthquake, gale force wind, putting out fire, and escape from a smokw-filled room there.
You can hang around each of the above places for a couple of hours.
In addition, 機器人廣場(http://robosquare.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/english/index.html) is close to 福岡市民防災中心. They have a few robots you can play with. It is also free but is not big, maybe you can stay for half an hour. 海濱百道海濱公園 is also nearby and kids can play with sand there. The sunset is spectaular.
