我相信個teacher interviewed amanda後,佢覺得amanda係有能力去上k,所以佢先會咁提出..我都會比佢一試.
正常都係5歲入k..咁amanda都係早半年..都唔係算好早入k jet.

just to be on the safe side, u might want to schedule an IQ test with an educational psychologist for Amanda before making a decision for her. if she is gifted then i would definitely let her skip one year. again, 1st grade is very different than kindergarten in catholic school. austin is 7, in 1st grade, is reading chapter book and doing 3rd grade's science (andrew told me he did the same science worksheet just a couple days ago!).....be prepare to work with her.

alvin is 2 and he's 30lb. chloe has to eat more la =p
nat nat should be gaining weight la since hk's food is much tastier than ny ma.

but amanda will be just turned 5 when the coming academic year starts end of Aug, while everybody else will be 6 to almost 7 yrs old in 1st grade. so other kids will be 1 to almost 2 yrs older than her.

that's a very good suggestion; however, i would concern abt the age differences for the level of maturity. for the gifted classes, the kids are all in the same age range in the same class, right?

i would rather send her to a tougher school where their standard is about 1 year ahead of the average standard while other kids are all in the same age range in the same class. then she could still go to the kindergarten class while learning the stuffs for 1st grade.

Amanda took the Gift and talent test

I wonder...? any one has their child took this test before???

Amanda's friend took this test weeks ago, her father said that it took her more than an hour to finish, and almost drive that little girl crazy..
But.. today... Amanda only took 20 min to finish the exam.. (even came out earlier than those who got into the classroom before her... she was the first one who came out

what do you guys think.........?
either she knows all questions.. so she did it like a CLICK
or.. she doesn't know anything and just point on any answer..as she did not pay any attention

we will be patience.. and wait until monday afternoon.. for the call from private school.
If they offer it to Amanda... we will let her take the trial class
If Amanda stress out.. I will take her off from the K class and request to let her join the preK in the same school immediately.. hope.. that will be the best option for Amanda..
do you guys agree?
my friends said that if Amanda is a gifted, government will have people to assist us.. for Amanda's social and academy needs... they will have people to follow up Amanda..
as you guys said..Amanda may need to have a new evaluation to be done (last one had been done when she was 4 years old, she was normal.. not ADHD kid)

what kind of test? the IQ test given by the psychologists?
otherwise, do u know the scope of the test? did u ask her how's she doing in the test?

we can not attend inside that examination room, so I got no idea what they did with Amanda..
The examiner said that we will have the result in about a week time..
Amanda said that she saw a lot of stuffs.. and she needs to point on the picture and something, then the examiner used a pencil to make the dot on that picture.
When we asked what inside the pictures, she said that she doesn't know how to tell, too much pictures, she said.. something asking her (in between), (Behind), (below).. and different between picture.. something like the 學能測驗 for Grade 6 in HK

I understand your concerns and agree your thoughts to let Amanda take the trial class, then you can know more if that's a better path for Amanda ... after knowing what you have known right now and if you & fat bear decide not to change anything, you might regret in the future ... I totally agree with you. nyc has this gifted test now which only scoring 95% or above r classified as gifted and could attend gifted class. and also two public ps in the city for the highly gifted. so they could all attend classes with the same age group. but it's not easy to get in.

Nillie,
andrew and austin took the gifted test last year but they changed it this year. which is based up on 25% barm and 75% olsat. they were on waiting list last year and couldnt make it. it's good that u know the test result in 1 week cuz they will send u a breakdown of the two tests scores.

Everytime when chloe is sick she loses 1-2 pounds too. Nanny was off last week, so I guess Chloe lost some weight since daycare don't feed as good as nanny. I don't know if chloe wants bro/sis, but I want lor haha

But not as easy sigh, I need to add oil! I think natnat wants a bro/sis!!!

good that nyc has the gifted programs starting from kindergarten at the public schools. in CA, i believe there're no gifted programs until 3rd or 4th grade at the public schools. also, i heard that it's not really too advanced compared to the regular program except that the teachers just give the kid extra special homework packages.

I don't think that Amanda really follow instruction on the gift test as she finished it in about 20 mins.. for others, they took an hour.
that is good if they will send me a result breakdown. as it is free exam.. it's worth to take it.

SY-mom,
the public one.. as i said.. we have no idea..
the one in private, we were there..
they asked Amanda to count numbers, colours, sharps, read some sentence, as her to build blocks as per direction, ask her about questions with A-Z, build letters to make different words. check her memories something like that plus to observe her behaviour in new environment..

there's no time constraints on the test, i am sure amanda found the test easy enough so she could actually finish so early naw.

getting a spot in gifted in public school is worst than going to ivy league...only scoring over 97% will be considered in the most wellknown public gifted school.....it's crazy.....hey i thought u r gonna send sean to private la. so no worries for u =p

that private school is not easy to get in either although it's extremely expensive. we paid $175 for the IQ test coz it's given by the professional psychologists coming from outside of the school.
he might be ok for the IQ test and the classroom readiness evaluation (for academics and behavior), but u never know ... also the school looks at the teacher recommendation which i think it's kinda unfavorable as i mentioned earlier. frankly i'm only 50/50 confident that he'll get in. i saw some parents and older kids actually cried when they kept trying every year for the tests but still didn't get in. one parent argued why her kid didn't do well at the test coz she's a straight A student at another academic private school.

well ... that's the only private school that i have confidence in. so if he can't get in or we decide not to pay for the expensive tuition, we might consider the good public schools. however, i realized that the priority 1 registration already started in early Jan or early Feb. so it's kinda too rush for us to move into those districts. also, the admission result from our #1 choice private school won't be sent out until mid March. can't believe it takes so long for them to make the decision as all the tests should be completed by mid Feb.

it's good that there's public gifted school available in nyc, so at least u'll have one more choice. in bay area CA, i don't think there's any public gifted schools available as far as i know. there're only gifted classes available starting from 3rd or 4th grade in the regular public schools.

btw, do u think the teacher quality/qualification in public schools are generally better than those in most private schools? coz teaching credentials are required at public schools, and the pay and benefits are also better at public schools. for example, i have 2 friends who are preschool and 1st grade teachers at public schools. they both have Masters and teaching credentials plus over 10 and over 20 years of teaching experience.
