Yes, the benefits in SF are quite good but only if you have medical insurance. Otherwise, it can be a lot. In California, the law states at least 13 weeks of maternity leave and the state will give you 55% of the pay (based on your previous quarterly pay). But, some companies had their own plan for employees to choose. My company offers 60% if not working in it for more than 1 year. After 1 year, the 13 weeks will be paid 100%. Childcare leave afterwards would be no pay. Well, overall, it is very good. Man can be entitled to have family leave for taking care newborn but the pay is not the same, somewhat like 6 weeks 60% pay.
SF is good in air quality and USA provides more choices of schools. But, the education system is also very complicated. If you decide to send the kid to private school, you need to prepare a large sum of money. Preschool charges from US$800 to US$1600 per month unless you are qualified for low income sponsorship. If you decide to send the kid to public school, you need to check the school district. Not all public schools are good, mostly of them do not have good education ratings in SF.
My mom applied the visa for me and I waited for 7 years to come to USA (it was speed up after she became a citizen). I landed SF in 2003 and met my husband at that time. Then, I came back to HK for work. Just kept email and phone calls with my husband. The next year, when I came back to SF for good, we started our dating and married in 2005. My son bornt in 2006 and I'm now expecting the 2nd one. I am not a citizen yet. Since I marry to a citizen, I can apply for citizenship after 3 years of marriage and 18 months of continuous residency. Therefore, I should be able to apply somewhat early next year. If I pass the exam, I can be a citizen. If people want to apply for spouse visa, I think that it may take around 2 years and it's quite strict. They need to provide proof of marriage, phone calls, photos, financial support, etc. But, if the woman is pregnant, it will be easier because it is the best proof.
