My kids are in Sunet Batpist Church's Chinese School, at Lawton between 42nd and 43rd st. Every Saturday, the kids like to go there buy some snack. They like it so much but it doesn't cheap at all.

bikbik,
My friend who live in sunset has also planned to let her son to go to cornerstone too. She lives in 26th & Lawton and her son possibly starts late this year. How's cornerstone? My friend chose it because it provides Chinese lessons and she likes the philosophy of the school. Also, it is a full year school, a lot of pre-schools only provide services for 10-11 months.
How's sutro school? Is it good?
I also go to 美華 sometimes because my mom likes to buy goceries in Chinatown instead (she does it every week and brings the food back). My hubby likes to buy dim sum and fruits on Clement Street. His favorite pizza restaurant is Giorgio's. We like to go to tudo before but it does not taste that good and cheap now. Have you ever bought any book from Green Apple? They have some children books at discounted prices all the time.

HI Rose mag
sue,
雞蛋仔d野一向我都覺得幾貴架,所以間唔中先去一次架咋

bikbik,

yr youngest one is 4 already?! but the picture shown is still a baby! guess u haven't updated the picture for a long time. me too ... the lego thing in the picture was built by my son the first time when he's 20 months old. but now he's 4 1/2.

btw, most of my friends' kids in SF/Daly City go to Cornerstone. i've checked out their web site before. i didn't feel like it's a tough school at that time ... but thought it's a billingual school?? or it's just happened that most teachers and students are chinese?
their tuition is not that expensive compared to most private schools in the sillicon valley and penisula areas.
anyway, we live in san jose now and never thought abt moving to SF. so it's out of our targets for our son's kindergarten next year.

Does anyone know what website or how to find out which default public school is assigned for certain (house) address? I live in Mountain View. I saw there are some good public elementary school and some are not that good. How do I find out which default school for my address? I went to greatschools.net but it just show me all the school in my school district. Do I have to call each school and give them my address to find out?

SY_mom,

Have you decide which school you gonna send your son to? Do you plan to move? By the way, your relative's kid that go to Yew Chung... is he going to study elementary school there as well? Do you know how's the academic standard (besides Chinese.. like Math, Science, English etc) there from Grade 1-5? Do you know if there's any long waiting list there? Like if my son go to other pre-school and kindergarten, can we switch him for Grade 1-5 at Yew Chung (or is it hard to get in if the kid doesn't study pre-school there)? I was checking the Sunnyvale Christian School seems that the tuition is much cheaper than Yew Chung... I don't if that's good. Do you have any recommendation on pre-school (that will continue for private elementary school) Christian around the area (from Santa Clara up to Redwood City - prefer Mtn View/Sunnyvale/Palo Alto area more)? Thx.

bunnymonkey,

in Mt View - only a few elementary schools are good from my personal opinions. 1 - Springer (but in Los Altos school district, so houses are close to the price range in Los Altos which is very expensive). 2 - Huff (MV Whisman district). 3- Bubb (MV Whisman). u can check out their API scores online. however, those houses in the Huff/Bubb areas are also not very cheap.

so, which are the closest public elementary to yr house??
u can start with that one and check with them. usually there's a boundary map posted at the school district's web site, but it's more accurate if u call the school to find out as they always change the boundary from time to time.

regarding Yew Chung, my friend just went to their open house. sounds like it's not cheap either. abt $1600 a month for tuition. although it's supposed to be a christian school, they're not charging the rate of christian school. also, u don't feel like u're in a christian school according to my cousin-in-law whose kid goes to their 3-yr-old program. not sure abt their academic but i guess it might be similar to the international school in HK? they also have campuses in HK, Singapore, Shanghai, etc. my cousin-in-law picked it becoz they definitely want their kid go to a billingual school and be good in chinese.
all i heard from her was that she's so suprised that the majority of kids there are caucasians instead of chinese.
maybe u should visit their school and find out more.

regarding sunnyvale christian, i've checked out their home page. looks like it's not too bad wor, and i've recommeded my friend to check it out, coz his husband works in sunnyvale.

also, Appleseed montessori is very popular in sunnyvale. they hv both regular program and billingual program, but their waiting list is always very long and i remember their tuition is also not cheap.

bunnymonkey,

i'm not sure how popular Yew Chung is.
but for those popular private schools that offer kindergarten and up, it'll be hard to get in if u don't start kindergarten from there. think abt it this way, if they hv abt the same number of seats in k and 1st grade, that mean they'll only have spaces available if someone leaves and won't stay for their 1st grade from k.

sy_mom,
I guess the "Edith Landels Elementary School" maybe the one for my address (which I heard the school's score is not that good - http://www.city-data.com/school/edith-landels-elementary-ca.html). I don't think I will move in the near future, so the other choice is to send my son to private school. Yew Chung is close by and I like the bililngual program. Howvever, if there's other cheaper Christian or other private school that's good (compare to Yew Chung), I may choose those instead (save some money for future rather then spending all in pre-school/k/elementary school). Thanks for your advice, I may check out with the public school later to find out for sure.

Yew Chung is a bit over $1600 + fees according to their website and that's for 10 months elementary program... So we will need to spend more on summer program/activity too. I heard some school may have 12 months elementary school/program, is that true? Or those are only for pre-school/kindergarten? I am suprise to hear that more caucasians in that school compare to asian/chinese kids too! :D Would be interesting to know what's the ratio... I guess I should check out their school's open day or so later on.

That Sunnyvale Christian seems to be close to my house as well and the tuition is cheap. If I read/remember it correctly, it's only $800 or so a month. So Yew Chung's is almost double! So Appleseed also has bilingual program? I will need to check it out then. Thanks! :)

wing_ca,

how do u like living in cupertino and the cupertino schools so far??
which school yr kids are going to?

we still hesitate if we should move to cupertino, becoz taiwanese is the majority there and might be too much competition.

when my boy was in a group piano class in cupertino a few months ago, there was a 3-yr-old chinese boy bit by his mom when he tried to push the keyboard by the his feet. his mom said he wasted her money. although he just turned 3, u can tell that his mom had him practicing at home. however, the rest of 3 kids (including my boy) seem never or seldom practice at home.

Hi SY_mom & All:

I may share my experience for moving to a good school district area.

I moved to Cupertino because of the great school district. (Only based on the API result) I used to lived in Daly City where is near San Francisco with 3 kids. The private tuition fee will be a great expenditure for me. So a good public school district is my first priority & I didn’t think about other issues in depth.

Actually, the living standard in San Francisco such as groceries shopping, dining out and the tuition fee (including private school & after school tuition fee) are much lower than Cupertino. It was not I expected! :-(

Most of the residents are India & Chinese in Cupertino. My daughter with 2 whites classmate only. The race is extremely uneven. I don’t know whether it is a good or bad for her.

I think it is a safe area for kid to play, live and learn area. The library collection is great; the park facilities are in good condition. There are tones of good quality after school program or center nearby. Mostly of them will only take ten-minute driving. My kids can even riding bike and playing ball game at my own front yard.

Cupertino is a small city and the allocation for school is based on address. So my neighbor’s kids also study at the same school as my daughter. It is great to take this credit. For example, they help me pick up the homework while my daughter has a sick leave.

As I mention before, most of the Cupertino residents are India & Chinese. I don’t know whether we (Asian) have some “chicken” personality impression for others or any other reasons. I have some bad experience shopping here & some of the Cupertino librarians are rude to Asian. I never ever have that bad experience at other district.

My first daughter is second grader. The curriculum is extremely easy compare to HK & the private school in Bay area. For example, she still learns how to add & subtract with 2 digits. My daughters are really happy for school live. However, the curriculums are based on California education standard. They won’t teach anything above of it. If you concern about academic issue, public school may not be your choose.

I don’t find any strong competition between students. They seems really enjoy the school life. I think the strong competition feeling & pressure are come from parents. Most of the parents are really concern about their own kids’ issue. If not, they won’t move here. 
I think the key point is to comfort & relax yourself & don’t try to put pressure on your own child.

I see. If you have 3 kids, I think it would be a better investment to move to a house in a good school district then paying for private school tuitions. :D

My son is 19 months now so my husband and I still haven't make a conclusion on whether to send my son to a public/private school yet. The elementary school in my area seems average (not too good, not extremely bad) but the middle school seems to have a much lower score (API). So hopefully by then, we may live in another area or will see how's the public school goes at the time. :)

wing_ca,

thanks for yr info. it's really helpful to us.

actually my husband and i are afraid that we might be discriminated by the taiwanese there, coz both don't speak mandarin. i did have that experience in milpitas and north valley areas, while i didn't have that experience with the caucasians in CA.

is your girl going to Faria? or have u heard abt it? i heard that it's very tough and kids got lots of homework.

since yr girl is in 2nd grade, are u going to apply for the GATE program for her the next academic year?
it sounds to me that most chinese parents want their kids got into the GATE program in public school.
