bunnymonkey,
Finally, we chose the #2 which is so far okay amongst all. My husband cancelled the appointment of the $600 one on last Friday and the reason was that he was too tired. When I called this Monday again to schedule appointment with the owner. The owner told me that someone dropped by Friday night and signed contract with her right the way. Now, she has no more opening. That owner was quite talkative and she told me that her home care has been opened in the same spot since 1977 and the kids usually stay in the center for years. We talked a bit on the phone and she seemed to be very nice and I know that we might like her but we just missed the chance. This owner wrote down my phone # and promised to inform me when there's opening again. I was sort of mad to my hubby who screwed up. To prevent this happen again, we went to sign the contract with #2 daycare yesterday night. This owner is sort of protective and she somewhat scares of my hubby who asked all kinds of questions and some of them are very indepth about fire safety, property safety, etc. Our concern is that her backyard is shared with another house which is also owned by her. There is a gate door which can lead through to the backyard is unlocked because of the fire regulation. However, her tenants always leave it opened and everybody can walk into it without difficulty. When we asked her about it, she said that when she take the babies out to the backyard, she has a half door locked (we saw that) and the caregivers would be with the kids watching. My hubby is still not too convinced but it's towards the end of the year and I'm told that finding a daycare at this moment is difficult. So, we finally take this one. We have 2 weeks' probation period and if it doesn't work out for both us and the owner, either of us can terminate the contract with 2 weeks' notice.
By the way, 20 minutes for 7 blocks is talking about walking time, not driving time. I will not drive to the daycare. First of all, I have not have a driver license yet. Secondly, parking around the area is so difficult to find. Thirdly, it is easier for me to walk there, drop off Spencer and take the bus to work (the bus stop is just around the corner of the daycare center).
Honestly speaking, costs of daycare in SF differ so much. It ranges from $600 to $1,200 per month. Home care is usually cheaper but it depends on the location and what kind of people it serves. Chinese home care is always lower in cost. The one that I like before costs $13,000 per year but they are big and a few of my coworkers put their kids there and they all love it.
