Nick is a creative fifth-grader who keeps wondering how things got their names. He invents a new word "frindle" and works together with his friends to replace the word "pen". The new word soon gets popular among youngsters, then spreads widely throughout the town, even the nation! Nick even ends up on David Letterman's Late Show talking about frindles! This however ignites the battle between Nick and his language arts teacher who has a great passion for dictionaries. Of course, their disagreement turns out to become something more...
Along with the humorous storyline, the book portrays the wonderful relationship between the teacher and the kid, who finally learn to appreciate and respect each other. Little readers also get to understand how words come into being. (Just as I believe that the word "muggle" will be put into many new editions of contemporary dictionaries!) My whole family enjoyed this little book a great deal. May seem a little bit wild, but it's a really entertaining and touching read!
