18-70 has a better body build compare to 18-135, but qualitywise, I don't know which one is better, maybe about the same. Rangewise, 18-135 is much more convinience. I will go for 18-135 if I were you.
Flash light, Nikon has SB400, SB600 and SB800.
SB400: $850, but can only turn up and down, can't turn left and right, this has limited you to shoot bounce vertically. The advantage is that it's light weight, good to carry around.
SB600: $1780, made in China, lighting are not very strong, but perfect for at home use.
SB800: $2680, made in Japan, top of the line, very powerful. Buy one with no regret.
Regarding lens, you shall also consider to buy Tamron A16, the range is 17-50mm, f2.8. Price is $2780, but the order led time is 2-3 months.
This lens has a better sharpness than 18-70 or 18-135. Many C Hing would strongly recommand this one. It can work in D70, but if you will buy D40 in the future, it's Auto focus function will not work.
