入嚟八一八, 見你哋講開 kids 讀書問題, 唔知有冇啲 website 可以 understand 多啲 US 嘅 education system ... 同埋係咪 every state is different?

我係 HK 填鴨式下嘅鴨仔, 所以 dunno much about here ... 而家做咗 mami, 真係要知多啲至得

alison, 你話 since 3rd grade 就要 every year take statewide test, 咁咪仲辛苦過 HK??

yup every state has different requirement.
i do feel like it's more stressful than in hk, in hk i used to learn grammer alot but here they dont stress that much. in hk everything is almost memorization but here u really have to know what's going on cuz the multiple choice is really tricky. english here is really alot harder than in hk, in my opinion of cuz. if you r interested in what the statewide test r like check this out for NYS sample

今個星期開始返工，基本上冇做到幾多嘢，因為security reason on leave 兩個月以上 logon access 就會俾 IT lock咗，要unlock就填form，再等4個 business days先得，等到今日下午先入到computer, 好多access 都冇咗，連personal drives 都冇埋，outlook archives 都唔知去咗邊。結果，又係填表啦、等啦‥唉﹏

as this is my first kid, i also hv no ideas abt the standard test in CA. so i checked out the web site of CDE. it seems like the testing start from grade 2 in CA

.

here's a sample for grade 3's standard test for English in CA for yr reference:

咩野叫做陰雲不息呢...就係個lego parent, 有一個仲死咬唔放, 地區決賽都完左, 佢仲sent email 俾national lego 又講返果三幅被,好煩呀. 本地lego 俾壓力我, 要我叫個家長收聲, 但我老細話, 呢個係美國, 係人都可以投訴, 我地唔做得啲咩. 夾係中間, 我好難做. 呢個weekend 又好困擾咁過.

另外, 我有一隊女童軍, 有九個女仔, 佢地既媽咪全部都係監獄, 有一個媽咪上個月出獄, 名義上仲係囚犯, 住係中途宿舍,有少少自由, 可以返屋企探仔女. 佢共有七個仔女, 個老公就全職揍仔. 佢地有4 個女都係我地個group. 個老豆問佢地要咩聖誕禮物, 佢地話唔要, 佢地既聖誕願望係可以見媽咪. 咁個老豆想俾驚喜啲仔女, 俾左幾百蚊個老婆, 叫佢買禮物帶返屋企, 等啲仔女有雙重驚喜, 有禮物又有媽咪. 點知個亞媽唔知做左啲咩, 俾人拉返入監獄, 個老公好激氣, 人又無錢又無, 仲話要離婚. 我地外人只係可以鄧果4姐妹可憐.

how come they don't have the same standard..
No kids left behind, doesn't mean that we have to decrease the standard.. that is kind of "unbelievable." they just lying to themselves.
beside can I ask for advice??

if I have to send Amanda to kindergarten next September..
2 options.. what should I choose?
1-- to private school. School fee USD$600/month
need uniform. always with holiday, they have after school(another USD$250). free transportation
I don't need to worry about the studies standard.
2-- to public school, free school fee, no uniform(I guess.. I don't know). not that much holiday, no after school, so I have to pay for afterschool (USD$300-400/month), no transportation, so I need to drop her off and she will be pick up by dycare for after school and drop off (another USD$200), plus, I need to send her to Fast track or some kind of education center to back up her maths, and reading skill (another few hundred)

For expense.. should be almost the same.. so what should I choose?
the PS in our district is the best one.. even all my friends use my address to apply their kids to this PS..

I have already file the application to PS48 and this end of the month, we will go for the open house in ST. Joseph hill acedemy..
I am struggle.. and argue with fat bear everyday.. we are worrying so much..

Nillie,
in your situation, go to hills & stop fighting with fat bear,
Pros:
1) although ps 48 is super good, u need after school (unless fatbear could do pick up and tutoring amanda after school)
2) no good junior high school in the area unless u r willing to go to brooklyn, i believe hills has middle school rite, so u will have to spend more $$ but u will have less headache if you go to hills.
3) amanda will be well behaved too. cuz they r supposed to be well discipline in catholic school.
Cosn:
1) alot of catholic school dont follow the state standard so they dont give any of the statewide test, u might want to check with hills...good and bad...
2) school uniformas and donations and school bills can add up in catholic school and need participation in school activities....

to my understand, mike bloomberg has already raised nyc school standard. http://www.mikebloomberg.com/en/news/washington_post_how_to_help_our_students_by_michael_bloomberg_and_jeb_bush
i really think the state test is enough for the kids already...common, hk kids only need to take one public test in primary school , here is every year starting 3rd grade, cant imagine 4th grade, they have 3 day test for english (reading, listening and writing), 2 day for math test (mc and story problem) 1 day for science..

我無仔細讀你所寫既開支比較, 但想分享下我同小黑揀學校既想法...其實係小黑既想法. 佢自己本身係私校仔, 所以佢好buy 私校,因為
1. 私校學生多數中產以上, 小黑識果啲同學都係大公司既仔女, 第時大個, 啲network 都多啲大啲.
2. 宜家俾歷仔入私校, 希望佢讀書叻啲,搏佢第時college 可以自己考獎學金. 所以希望而家投資多啲, 搏下第時小啲負担.

The education system is not much better in CA, at least in SF. Some of private pre-school and kindergarten have long waiting lists and they count on the application date. I'm told that some of them suggest moms to enroll their kids when they are still pregnant. Otherwise, they may not be able to enter the schools because of the long waiting list. Most of the private schools require parent interviews, kid interviews, essay writing, play dates, tests, etc. Donations, voluntary work hours for the school, selling of chocolates are only the most common duties for the parents to the schools. Some of the public schools are good but a lot of them are in very shitty neighborhood and we don't want our kids to be there for security risks. In SF, all kids enter into lottery for kindergarten and you cannot guarantee where your kid's school will be. Or, you can look for private school and goes thru all those crazy screening processes. I discuss with my hubby on choosing the school for my son and he just always think that it's too early to think about it. And for some reasons, he bases on his understanding of the school system in the past to make judgements. I would rather start to look for school on my own first.

as for the cost of that catholic school u mentioned, it's already very cheap.
however, personally i'm not a big fans of catholic school. i think the catholic schools in here are different than those in HK. maybe more kids from catholic families. also, from my observations from my friends who went to catholic schools in US, mostly they went to catholic schools all the way from kindergarten up til college. maybe becoz most of their friends went to those catholic colleges too.

however, in fact, the "average" private/catholic schools are better than the average pubic schools. but sometimes the top public schools are better than most catholic schools, and vice versa.

my husband also said the same thing as 小黑, when he said we should apply that private school which costs $20+k to $30+k tuition a year.

when we visited that school this morning, it's so amazing to see the kindergarten kids are already doing reading comprehension when the teacher asked them questions after they've read a chapter of a book in the class. don't know if it's a good or bad thing ...

i agree most public schools in SF are so-so except for the Lowell high school. that's why most of my friends in SF/Daly city sent their kids to cornerstone for elementary. however, there're always exceptions.
my dad's relative's son just went to pubic elementary and middle schools (so-so ones) but he just got into Lowell high last year. his parents don't even know much english and he didn't go to any tutoring center.

some of my friends who immigranted from HK when they were teens, just went to public high schools (not Lowell) in SF. lots of them ended up went to UC Berkeley.

well ... sometimes i said "depends on yr luck ...."

of cuz it really depends on the kid him/herself. alot of chinese immigrant's kids r in gifted class and their parents dunno any english. catholic school is alot cheaper than private school, cuz they have funding from the gov and also from the parish. for staten island academy (private) is over 15,000+ a year however catholic school in the area is only 6,000. that's why catholic school is asking for donations and we have to pay 1,000 cuz we are not catholic and since we are not gonna be participating in any school funding activities another 600..school bills another 300...uniform another 200.. it would be cheaper if you belong to the parish. for catholic school the reason of having to go all the way is becuz alot of them dont follow the state standard. so they skipped the statewide test. so normally catholic school kids r staying till junior high school at least and take the high school admission test if wanna go for the better public high schools.
