nillie,

sounds like amanda and sean got similar characters. i'm sure they would be good friends if we lived close by ...
we also thought abt the same - sending him to private school instead ofpaying $10k to $20k for annual property tax for the top public schooldistricts for under 1000 to 2000 sq ft houses.
however, the private school that we like cost $22k to $32k tuition ayear plus extremely hard to get in. that's why we've been struggling... if he's going to that school, we'll need to cut budget for ournext dreamed home.

so, u're gonna apply the st. joseph hill catholic school (if i remember the name correctly) for amanda? i'm sure she'll be ok.
is that the only private school u'll be applying for her?

I just have a job interview today (in such a bad stormy weather - my feet are all soaked with water). It's an opening of senior clerk typist in SF Water Dept. The work is simple and the pay is quite okay with good benefit. The whole interview was composed of oral and computer test. The computer test is just a piece of cake while I believe that I did quite good in the oral part. My hubby told me to take the job if they extend the offer to me. But, the office is in a bad neighborhood and it takes me an hour if I take the bus (20-30 mins for my current job), 30 mins if I drive (but I don't have a driver license yet). The office hour is flexible and all the people there seem to be very nice. My hubby also said that if I get the job, I don't have to worry for layoff and I have excellent health benefit. I'm not sure about that but I think that I need to wait for the result first. Well, I like my current manager who is a very nice guy and he allows me so much flexibility on working hours so that I can take care my kids.

Hi all moms,

I am facing a diliema right now. I am currently working from home but found myself is way underpaid. My employer doesn't give me any good raise for years even I do have good performance. I guess they reserve the raise for the folks who travel or commute to the client. I feel kinda upset by that, so I went out and started my job hunting, and I now got an offer with a local company. I am not sure if I should accept the offer. The new offer is paying more, but I will have to give up the flexibility on working from home. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Hi junw, I am working from home too and is really enjoying the flexibility as you said.

I think it depends on a lot of factors. How far/close is the new office? How flexible can the work schedule be? Some bosses are actually very understanding and flexible. How old are your kids and if anyone else can help you in case you can't take time off from work.

Have you tried to negotiate with your current boss and see if they can give you a fairer raise? Sometimes you really need to voice out.

Hi Ms Chao,

Thank you for your response. I have a set of almost 4 years old twins. We don't have any help from relatives as they are not living close by.

The new office is about 30mins drive with no trafffic, it usually takes longer time during the rush hours. The new boss seems to be flexible on scheudle, and possible to have occasional working remote if needed.

I tried to negotiate with my current boss on my performance review meeting, but she has all kind of excuses and the speech on the factors that could affect raises. One of the factor is the ability to travel. Since I can't travel, it is a disadvantage to me. Also, as I am only limited to the remote work, that is kinda limited my choice on picking the next assignment, and as a result limited my career growth. I got a feeling from the meeting that I wouldn't be getting any big raise, 2-3% the most. I am kinda 心淡. That's why I started my job hunting.

HI junw, wow, you have twins, how cute! Boys or girls? No wonder you need a flexible work schedule. Your hands must be full all the time taking care of the twins, especially you don't have help from relatives.

I guess if you have already discussed the issue with your current boss and there seems to be no way they can raise your salary, it's good to have a new start.

Just make sure you factor in the commuting expense (gas and car maintenance) into the salary comparison. If the new job still pays significantly higher (like 30% or more), I would definitely go for it. Otherwise, confirm with the new company if you can work from home for one or two days week.

To me, flexible schedule is extremely important. I heard that as your kids get older, you actually need a more flexible work schedule in order to pick up/drop off your kids for after school activities. Some activities may even require parents participation or involvement.

Have you discussed it with your husband? His support is very important too.

junw,

i kinda understand yr situation now.
my previous job required up to 100% traveling and definitely paid more than similar jobs that not required traveling. i think probably at least 15% more. and i heard that some managers gave more bonus to those who travelled more than 50%.
so, if i go back to work, i don't expect i can get the pay of my previous job as i don't want any traveling at all if possible and i would rather have a lower pay instead.

also, it depends on your priority and what's most important to u. to me, flexibility is very important, and i don't wanna commute too far for my next job. i guess my priority is completely different when i have kid.

JUNW, 我覺得如果個現任BOSS無心留人, 我會傾向走.當然又要睇下新工作既工作量, 有時你公司, 俾多人少少, 但工作量多多, 咁就唔抵勒. 如果FLEXILBE TIME對你好重要, 咁你要MAKE SURE 新工可以俾你WORK FR HOME.

junw, weight the pros and cons of your current one and the new one. Flexibility is very important if you don't have a backup childcare option. For your current boss, I think that he just give some kind of excuses not to give you a fair raise. My company also underpay me (my other counterpart had $5000 more and the only reason is that she needs to commute in between 2 offices) and even though I raised it before, I could not have a better raise. So, I somewhat keep hunting for job. But, on the other hand, my direct manager is a very good guy and he gives me a lot of flexibility. I don't have to work 8 hours per day (but get the pay of 40 hours per week) and he allows me to take off when my son's sick or my mom cannot take care of my daughter. Plus, the commuting time is so short, only 20-30 minutes by bus. It's really hard to find such a nice boss. For your case, you need to communicate with the new boss and see if he can accommodate your needs and see which is your priority. Good luck!

I raised the concern that I will need flexibility on the job during the interview with the new employer. They seems OK with it. Even I won't be able to work remote on a daily basis, but they are ok with the occasional basis when needed. Also, I talked with the team members during the interview, and I got a feeling that the company is pretty flexibile on schedule and the company is pretty good on work life balance. The employee there just need to plug in 40 hrs/wk. I n my current job, we usually have to work at least 44hrs /wk without OT pay. I think I am kinda like muimui313 that 條氣唔順 about my current employer.

Junw,

I know it's very frustrating. Even your employer is pretty flexible and let you work remotely, you won't be happy in such environment. If you really feel like 條氣唔順, you should start looking for another job. I believe there is always something better out there. :)

I think I will probably take the new offer as it pay significant higher and they also promised for the flexibility, I guess I can give it a try. I am going to put in my 2 weeks notices tomorrow. It is hard as I have been with my current employer for a long long time.

junw,
You have been with your current boss for long time but he still treat you like this? I don't see any reason to stay lor. That means they have underpay you for a long time. You should be happy that you can find a new job that quick and you really have a market value to ask for a significant higher pay.:loveliness:

I turned in my resignation to my current employer. My manager seems happy about my decision, she said that she is happy for me for the better opportunity. Well, I guess I have saved her a severance pacakage.

My current job was once upon a time a relatively well pay position when I joined the company. But with only 2% the most on annual raise, and some years might have salary freezed because of company hardtime, and I missed the salary adjustment during my long term LOA. Then I become way underpaid, but the management team do not care about giving me any adjustment as I am not as flexibile as before I have kids, so I guess jumping ship is the only way to get a pay raise. It is a irony that the longer we stay in the company the higher the chance we become underpaid.
