'An/A' : Why do we say 'an MTR train' and not 'a MTR train'?
An is used before words starting with a vowel sound. Note that 'a, e, i, o, u' are letters of the alphabet only. They are NOT vowel sounds. The spelling can be misleading sometimes so it is best to look up the pronunciation of words in the dictionary so that you choose the correct article.
The letter 'M' in 'MTR' is pronounced /em/. /e/ is a vowel sound. That is why we use an in front of 'MTR train'.
