According to Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary :

When a person is tried, he or she has to appear in a court of law and the judge and jury listen to the evidence about a particular case or crime, and decide if the person is guilty.

So, what exactly is the question ?

At first I thought that this was a very simple question.
If this is not about spelling mistake, grammatically, the answer should be:
Helen is trying. (Ant is correct. Haha, very funny to read your messages with fungwongphie)
If spelling mistake is what the teacher intends to ask, then the answer should be:
Helen is tired.
Oh well, for primary one student, I think the question should be straight forward that the answer to be "Helen is tired."
Don't complicate matters. Primary one student hasn't learnt continuous tense yet.

If so, the kids will change 'tried' to 'tired' whenever he/she sees this word gor wor...............

'Helen is tried' is also grammatically correct ga.....but normally we will add the reason for why she is tried.....like.....Helen is tried for stealing sth from somewhere/sb ??

Dear all mom,

真係唔該晒各位既意見, 呢個問題係係女女學校 d worksheet ( 冇圖畫, 只係得條問題 ), 我同佢填左 Helen is tired. 因為佢未教到用 "was", 再加上之前我教佢寫 try & trying, 老師都話 wrong, 但係又冇教番佢正確個答案喎, 只係叫佢改正今日再交

, 有時教佢做功課, 真係頭都大埋

不過真係唔該晒甘多位先

If you mean "tired", it is an adjective used to describe Helen. So it should read "Helen is tired."
If you mean past tense of "try" - "tried". It is a verb. It should read "Helen has tried." or "Helen tried (hard)."
