Somewhere between seven and nine months, your baby will start todevelop the skills necessary to eat finger foods. She'll probably starttrying to pick up objects with her thumb and forefinger, a skill calledthe pincer grasp. She'll also continue to put everything she can into her mouth, anothersign that she's ready to expand her diet. This is the time to startoffering her finger foods, such as sticks of well-cooked carrot, chunksof banana or unsalted breadsticks and mini rice cakes, so that she canpractise feeding herself. Other ideas for finger foods include cheese, toast and peeled chunks of apple. Avoid sweet biscuits and rusks sothat your baby doesn't get into the habit of expecting sweet snacks.
