Thanks for your suggestion. I will look for some audio books from the local library later. I am not sure if my son can understand though, since he is still picking up English.
One more thing I would like to need your advice. Do you, or other parents, have good suggestions on hotels in Blue Mountain? My criteria:
1) location - I may only go by train and explorer bus
2) price - I only want to create an experience for my son to sleep at a place other than home, so a basic but clean and tidy one with reasonable price is enough for me.

Hello Josephine,
I do understand that long trips and children just doesn't mix well. Though I have found that car trips are better than using public transport with my kids. This is because I can con ...
Country & Garden Fair
Don’t miss Hornsby Shire’s biggest free event for 2008 – the Country and Garden Fair at Fagan Park on Arcadia Road, Galston, on Sunday 21 September from 10.00am until 4.00pm.
Dorothy the Dinosaur will be there on the day for live performance at 11.00am and 1.00pm.
The park will be abuzz with live snake and magic shows, dozens of scarecrows, rides for the kids, face painting, visits by the Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service, performances by local music and dance groups and roving entertainment.
Come and enjoy more than 80 food, gardening and craft market stalls.
Last year more than 6,000 people came along to the fair.
Entry to the fair is free with a $4 per vehicle donation to the Hornsby SES at the park gates. Or why not catch the free shuttle bus departing from Hornsby Station to Fagan Park at regular intervals throughout the day.
This event is part of the annual Galston Springfest. Visit www.hillsrural.com.au for more information on the Springfest.
There will be something for everyone at the 2008 Country & Garden Fair.
Update on the Illlawarra Fly (mentioned in earlier post):
If you are not too keen on amuzement park rides, then think twice before going onto the 2 springboard cantilevers!! It does move with the wind, and vibrate / bounce with every step.
On our way last weekend, we stopped off at Carrington Falls (only 5 to 10 minutes up the road) to have picnic. The walk to the waterfall is very easy. The whole family enjoyed it.
Thanks for your previous advice. I have eventually picked Blue Mountains for a 2 days trip during school holidays -- all by public transporation! . We had been to Scenic World and Zigzag Railway. Guess what my son like the best ----
the spa in the apartment!
Hope you and other BK mums and dads were having great fun during the school holidays.

Fantastic. All by public transport is an achievement.
I experienced this with my friends last month. We went to Wangal Centenary Reserve at Mortlake (Hilly St, Mortdale) for a birthday lunch, then drove our cars onto the Putney Punt to return to the other side of Parramatta River for school pickup.
Parks on either side of Parramatta River are great:
Wangal Centenary Reserve is right on the water - great for picnic / ball games / bikes & scooters (small playground equipments).
Bennelong Park (Waterview St, Putney) - a very large park, lots of play equipments, suitable for kids of all ages (splash pool, large slides, climbing frame etc) - great for BBQ / picnic / play.
Monday - Friday (excluding public holidays)
Leaving Mortlake:
6.45am continuously until 9.25am
2.45pm continuously until 6.15pm
Leaving Putney
6.55am continuously until 9.35am
2.55pm continuously until 6.25pm
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
Leaving Mortlake
10.30am then every half hour until 12.30pm
1.05pm, 1.30pm then every half hour until 5.30pm (last service)
Leaving Putney
10.45am then every half hour until 12.15pm, 12.35pm
1.15pm then every half hour until 5.15pm, 5.35pm (last service)
Commonly known to locals as the Putney punt the Mortlake ferry began operating in 1925 and is the only remaining punt in the Sydney metropolitan area. It crosses the Parramatta River from Hilly Street, Mortlake to Pellisier road, Putney. The trip takes approximately 5 minutes.
We first tried this during June long weekend - it rained non-stop, hard to find things to keep 3 kids entertained, so packed up & went home a day early.
We went there again at the end of October. This time with 5 other families from our Mothersgroup.
Facilities are very basic (3 stars or less), but these are the reasons we went there:
- tight budget
- 6 Safari Bungalows, off in one corner of the park, around a reasonablely large grassed area and BBQ - so 14 kids can play without worrying about cars & other people (as that corner is just us & our cars).
- BBQ with water tap / sink / power point / light - easy to prepare meals for 12 adults + 14 kids.
- each tent has it's own ensuite - made it much easier for kids to go to the bathroom at night.
- just across the road from the beach
p.s.
- need to bring your own linen / pillow / towel / cooking utensils (we also brought the gas burner used at home for steamboats + 4 way power extension board)
