To own a car, you need to consider the running cost - Gas, spare parts. Japanese car is more economic compared with European car (same capacity - c.c.) Also, there are a lot of OEM (cheaper) spare parts avaliable in the market.
The capacity of Peugeot 206 is less than Lexus IS200, so should be more save in gas, but actually they are in different classes. Lexus IS200 is advanced in design, handling and safety as someone mentioned before that Peugeot is out of the European car range for safety. Also, the engine for Lexus/Toyota is very reliable and long lasting.
