Nillie,
We don't have many charter school in SF. I have attended a workshop before and the presentation of a parent from one of the charter schools really impressed me and my husband. She told us about her experience and how her child thrives in there. However, she points out one thing is the curriculum and PSI score. It is not comparable to the normal schools and it may be a potential problem to look for middle school and high school. And the charter schools are quite far away from my home. There are some schools we call alternative schools, using arts & crafts or music as the media to teach kids. I really like the idea and I can imagine that Spen and Amanda would enjoy it but not every one is successful. Many of them still have a low academic performance.
Spen has a speech delay and we are still working on getting him therapy. My husband's company insurance carrier disapproved it and school district claimed that he's not "severous enough" to be covered by their services. Now, we wrote to Department of Public Health to protest and they will make the insurance company to pay if they review it and consider that my son should have it. So, we have our fingers crossed for it.
Another issue of Spen is that he needs a lot of attention and patience from the others (teachers, parents, friends, etc.), partially because of his speech issue. Therefore, we will not send him to a big school where nobody cares about an individual kid playing alone with anger and sorrow. We will never forget what have happened in the previous school and we are glad that we have made a decision to move to the current one. He's learning and the teachers are more experienced. Spen still has a long way to go but he has improved a lot. At least, he is happier and better prepared to go to K in August.
There are so much for me to learn as a parent...
