My three year old girl has never been a mom too, but she is always cleaning the kitten like a mom!! The funny thing is, the younger one treats her like she is his mom as well :D
When we tell him off, he is not afraid. But he is afraid when she tells him off !!!!
The older ones usually take care of the young ones, even male older cat will take care of younger cats. We had a 15 year old male cat when we got the female cat (about 3 months old), he took care of her. After he passed away, we got the little one and she takes care of him
