Hi dillon, yes JR pass is good but how about the suitcases? Need carry the suitcases all the way coz mostly everyday will check in hotel at night only? Thx
To avoid problems with luggage, you can stay in one hotel and take day trips. Hakata is a convenient base as it is within 2 hours from just about everywhere in Northern Kyushu. By sinkansen it is 35 minutes to Kumamoto, and 10 minutes to Kokura. Day trips to Sasebo, Nagasaki, Huis Ten Bosch, Beppu, Aso, etc., are all possible. You can even take a special train, like the Aso Boy from Kumamoto to Aso, and the kids love it. The Toyoko Inn at Hakata Station is quite good.
I took a taxi from Hakata station (the side closest to the Airport) last month and it was 1000 yen. Taking a taxi from the other side of the station will cost more.
Dillion, oh that's good wor! I really can consider wor! For me, coz this time we can only go for 6 days, so let me summarize sin, the place we MUST go is harmonyland, 豪斯登堡, go to visit ah bun and ah Jim, perhaps if have time, we will go up to the ah so volcano ( it seems can take cable car?? But is that safe?). So as u said, can consider same day return on some places except 豪斯登堡 coz far away and want to see fireworks?
Even豪斯登堡is possible. It is 1 hr 40 min by Ltd Express train from Hakata. Personally I think豪斯登堡is overpriced. I have seen equally attractive gardens which charge much less, and the games are not exciting at all.
The cable car is safe as long as you are allowed to go up to Mt Aso. When the volcano emits gases, you can not go up, whether by car or by cable car. You should check the Aso website on the day you fgo there to make sure that you can ascend the volcano. From Hakata it is 35 minutes to Kumamoto by Sinkansen, then 1hr 10 min to Aso by Ltd Exp or one and a half hour by Aso Boy (leaving at 10:26?). Then you take a bus to the West Aso cable car station. On the way the bus will stop at草千里where the Volcano Museum is located. I was there last summer and the crater was beautiful.
To go to Beppu or Oita it is faster to take a Sinkansen to Kokura first then switch to a Ltd Exp train, than taking a Ltd Exp train all the way. This way you should be able to reach Beppu from Hakata in 1hr and 40 min.
Mojiko門司港 is a nice place to visit. It is about 15 min by train from Kokura.
You can also consider renting a car for 1 or 2 days and taking the train the rest of the way. It is also possible to leave most of your luggage at the Hakata Hotel (ask the hotel) if you plan to be away for 2 days and will return to the hotel.
Dillion, u are wonderful! Thanks so much! Indeed I went to 豪斯登堡12yrs before, that time was great but now I still struggling to go with kids this summer or not, coz seems the games not really suit my kids. But it seems if we re going to 九州,but not go to 豪斯登堡seems not so good gum, haha
I am thinking the same as u, maybe rent 2 days car, so do u mind telling me which days or hotspots I should drive? Aso farm and volcano and 豪斯登堡?? Or the night which I should stay in an Onsen hotel?
definitely take a car in the Beppu-Yufuin-Aso area. Yufuin is not far from Aso yet public transportation is sparse. It is slow to go by train or bus in that part of Kyushu.
Harmonyland is near Nakatsu which is mid-way between Kokura and Beppu. It will save time if you drive over there instead of taking a train and then a bus. You probably would like to include it in your driving itinerary. You should be able to rent a car at Nakatsu but it is best to check out the cost of the train from Fukuoka. Normally it is cheaper to buy 2 or 4 tickets together.
You don't need a car in Fukuoka. Public transportation is so convenient there. Kokura and Mojiko are best explored on foot from the train stations.
I would stay at Hakata. The Hakata station is itself an attraction and full of shopping opportunities. Canal City is a 10-min walk away. If you want to go to an outlet there is one in Fukuoka in Marinoa City (http://www.marinoacity.com/chinese-tra/). You can go there by bus from the Hakata station bus terminal. A cheaper way is to go by subway to 姪濱站 (290 yen) then take 昭和巴士(100 yen) . There is a 50% discount coupon for 昭和巴士 available at Marinona City. Not sure if you can pick up the coupon at 姪濱站. By the way, 1-day subway ticket (adult 500 yen) is a good investment.
