I stayed at Marriot & Spa Resort last year, not too far away from city, 15 mins boat ride(depart also every 15mins from/to hotel), they board right next to the BTS. My kids loved the boat ride, it's comfortable and relaxing. If you don't like riding a boat, you can also take taxi from the hotel, taxi is cheaper than BTS(2 adults, 2 kids).
The room is spacious and nice, buffet breakfast were included in my package, food was pretty good. Also connected with the hotel, there is a little shopping centre, they have Boots, KFC, Macdonalds, Sizzlers and other local restaurants, it's very convenient if you have kids. The Spa in the hotel is famous but quite expensive.
I don't remember the name of the complex, but it is kind of belong to the hotel, it is connected, I just walked there to buy food for my sons anytime I want. The good thing about the hotel is it can take 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids) in 1 room, even with a extra bed, it's still spacious, I think Peninsula Hotel only let max 3 persons in a room.
Having said that, if you really like shopping a lot, then may be you should stay in City Centre, but if you want to relax, have a good value for money hotel, Marriott is the place.
