yes, use matrix metering is OK, try using slower shutter speed in order to capture the firework, from the time it rises to the time it explodes --> 1sec or more is better
you can set the shutter speed to bulb, press the shutter, and hold a black card in front of the lens, once the firework start, remove the black card, the track of the rising firework will be recorded, then after it explodes, cover the black card and press shutter to close the exposure.
