doggie,
In Vancouver, waived the taxes for the whole shopping centre is never happen. Yes, Brick, the furniture shop is saying that, or SEARS as a way of promotion.
we are also family of 3, but to save every penny, I do buy something in bulk, eg, 1kg peanut butter! family pack of meat as it is really come cheaper than you buy small amount. We cook everyday and the rest just leave it on freeze.
I know you got chinese veggies, but what I mean is do you get all sort of veggie, such as "kau kei" which is only Chinese eat. I am not sure how big is the Chinese community in ON and I just wonder if you have those type of exotic veggie..the reason I say exoitc as western will not understand what veggie and how to cook it.
PoohPoohMaMa,
I am not sure if ON people has higher income or they dont spend too much on the housing...but in Vancouver, the average mortage is over 50% before taxes, which is the highest in Canada. If base on that average, we dont have much money left to send kids to expensive daycare.
if I am not on maternity leave, I will send my daughter to after school care which is just next to school and they responsible for drop in/pick up, but it is only $4xx, cheaper than full time daycare as kindergarten is free anyway. My daughter current daycare also takes care of those kids go to nearby kindergarten, I think also $4xx and among that 20kids, 5 of them are kindergarten kids.
Yes, education system is never perfect but since there is limited money to spend, we just tolerate it.
Agree that taxes doesnt really mean everything as the general price may be higher in those provinces due to transportation cost.
Lily,
I didnt sign up for COSCO as Superstore sells almost the same price. During weekend, we can see people buy full trolley of grocery and it is the cheapest place on almost everything. We also have wholesale Superstore close to our house and it is even slightly cheaper, but it really in bulk. But as I said, I do shop from there as the bulk size item is very cheap. eg, Cheerio snack cost you $2/pack but 1kg Cheerio snack only $6 which is 5 times of the small pack.
How about homo milk in ON? Recently the price goes up, now it is $ 4.11 for a 4lit compare with $3.xx. Superstore is the cheapest, but still $ 3.76. I bought 2 bottle every week!
Lily,
Is 4lit milk comes with plastic? I never saw any milk so expensive, is it something add on or it is organic milk?
I think we have only 3 brand name here for 4lit and those exotic with Omega addon is smaller size.
My neigbour say Save On sells the best taste but cost $4.11 while Superstore is not that tasty, but I dont find any different as my daughter will add chocolate on it.
most of our 4lit milk come in plastic bags, need to buy a milk pitcher to hold it. average price is $4.x to 5.x depends if you are buying for those high-calcium or latose free (hope my spelling is correct).
yes, if you are looking for the "kau kei", have to go to the chinese grocery shop to find such, but if just for 'choy sum' 'bak shoy' 'winter-melon', bitter-melon... etc. most of the chinese section in western grocery shop do carry that...
doggie,
It is interesting to hear that 4LIT milk comes with plastic bag? Do you have 4lit soya milk from T&T? like a square shape with a handle. This is a recycle bottle and no charge on it.
In Vancouver, only homo or those skim milk come with 4litre plastic bottle, otherwise, only 1lit or 2lit. I guess milk is cheaper in BC as the highest price is $4.11/4lit.
Chinese veggies are common in ON, but just wonder if it grows in ON or ship it from BC? We have a large farm land at surburb and many Indians do own a farm there.
How about the gas. Our gas is $1.01/lit today. I guess ON is much cheaper. It was always $0.95 in the last few months and it just jump higher recently.
Lily,
Thanks!
No wonder no one want to own a car here in Vancouver!
ON has farm, but do they plant anything during winter? The farm near our house close down in winter but I am not sure how the farm can grow veggie during winter.
Soyamilk never come with plastic bag...it is interesting to see same country but pack it differently.
Is it normal to see people buy full trolley of stuff on weekend? It is really full and I dont know how often they do shopping as I never shop so much in my life. eg, 6 pack of milk, 10bags of bread and they dont look like doing business, just normal family.
Lily,
It is true that most of the big shoppers are westerners!
Just wonder how often do you do shopping? I do it every week and my freezer is full of frozen meat.
Is seafood cheap in Toronto due to the lake?
Do you have live fish on sale? Like the one in HK in fish tank? T&T has it, live crab, shrimp, lobster... In Vancouver, live fish can cost you $4.99/lb or even more as I never bought it.
doggie,
Just wonder if all your relatives sit together for reunion dinner? I remembered you said there is some issues between them. Can you MIL solve it as she is there?
I am not sure if the fish is cheaper, it is too expensive for me! Besides, my husband doesnt like fish with bones, so fillet will be his favourite anyway! Recently I steam the frozen"chong" fish with blackbean and garlic and my daughter can eat the whole fish and she can even know how to remove the bones, it surprised me! She said she want to eat more and it is around $ 3.99/lb, not that bad!
will have dinner with BIL's family tomorrow night... yummy food (so far I heard)... so we always said the lucky money will be just like the "entrance" fee for the yummy food.
i thought you eat at your neighbour's place? now you change your plan??
doggie,
No, I asked if you MIL solved the conflict between you BIL and SIL as you said they dont get along.
NO. I didnt ask my neigbour to cook for me anymore as my daughter doesnt eat much after 1 month with them. Then my appetite improve and now I cook every night. As my husband is not home for 2 nights and I usually make some veggie and steam a fish. I also bought a new rice cooker, just for $37 and come with a steamer shelf, so it is much easier for me to steam thing and it is bigger size, 10 cup(or pp, I guess)
My neigbour's husband, the old man, also back and now the wife is working full time. Our life is very busy as I cannot depend on her any more. Few weeks ago my daughter has flu and my husband and I have to take turn to take off for a week. One day I have to rush to pick her up right after half an hour my husband drop her as her fever didnt go. You know it is not easy to handle as my husband is more sick than my daughter! I also got cough but I didnt take any medicine and now since both recover, I am back to normal now.
