Re: Markham / Richmond

xother

that's great to hear - you should be o.k. with your test... and by Aug or so, you will be a canadian citizen and have the voting right

3% is a lot, guess i haven't have that % for the past 10 years... right after the asian turmoil. salary got freeze for almost 5 years and then move to here, increment is just like 1% or or, guess the highest is 1.6% so 3% is really a lot to me wish I could have such in the future...

however, have to be contented as initially thought no job after June, but now, not only have my job back and with 1% salary raise, I should not complaint any more

Re: Markham / Richmond

doggie,
Voting is never my concern but getting the Canadian passport is always my husband's dream. He was so nervous and study so hard for the citizenship test.

Anyway, my brother told me the outlet just across the border is good and I think once we got our citizenship, we will go there to do some shopping. Last time my brother came, he bought all the brand names clothes, bags and accessories with decent price and he was telling me he has not enough time to really look through all shops.

When are you going to apply your citizenship? You know you cannot get a govt job if you are not citizen? Working at immigration is very good job and big salary as well! My husband is aimed to work in govt and travel freely, so the citizenship is really important to him. 1

Thanks for your information. Are you living in Vancouver? Do you know if I bring my son to Canada this summer, can he apply a carecard individually?

Re: Markham / Richmond

unkuku,
Yes, I live in Vancouver.
Sorry, I am not sure what do you mean apply individually. All care cards are individual but whether your son is qualify, it is another issue. You need to be resident for over 6months in Canada in order for qualify and I believe one of the parent has to be with the child as care card is not free in this country. Either you have to claim you are from low income family or your employer pay for it.

Re: Markham / Richmond

If over 67% parents vote for YES, my daughters's school will add Mandarin class to the school subject next term. I do hope most parents vote for YES. The principal informed that this is the first year that the toronto catholic school board will have Chinese to be included in the day school.

unkuku,

If you are talking about Vancouver, it is hard to say what is good place for kids. How old is your child, what he likes, do you have a car and how much is your budget, etc.

Re: Markham / Richmond

ckkwkl,
I thought ON do have Mandarin class offer for free and my colleauge told me most kids in school can speak fluent French at G4. Is that true?
In Vancouver, I know most kids dont speak French although most of them take French as a second lanugage throughout their school years.

For me, I prefer my daughter to study French in school and take Chinese during weekend as I think French is more useful if she are going to stay in Canada for the rest of life.

do you have any french school in your area. here in toronto, they do have french school, where student use french for their medium...

I don't think Mandarin class is free, even thou organised by the education board, you still need to pay to attend the class...
I don't think there is any free lunch in toronto. :-(

Re: Markham / Richmond

doggie,
Yes, we do have French immersion school but we dont want that. I heard from news that there is large demand for Chinese parent want to send kids to that type of school. I just want my daughter to learn French as a second langage. Like my hubby always claim he can read French and spoke broken French.

I thought last time Yukimommy said she sent her daughter to Mandarin class for free, or I just misunderstood??

My ex-colleage who came from Toronto and he told me Toronto school expect him to speak fluent French at G4 and that why when he move to Vancouver at age 13yrs, he took other language as his second language. I thought in Vancouver we have more Chinese speaking job while ON should have more French speaking job, especially you are close to Ottawa.

French is a must at school in Ontario. My daughters' school wants to have both French and Mandarin as a MUST subjects in school, that is, will not give up French, but plus Mandarin as a third language. My daughters are attending Mandarin class on Saturday, but this will be an adds-on on daily regular school.

the saturdays class is $20 for the whole year, which is offered by the toronto catholic school board, but welcome non catholic students. i just enrolled my two girls for next year, cantonese on AM and Mandarin on PM. it costs me total $80 for both of them.
about the one from their regular school, this will be free of charge, but depends on the number of % of parents who wants to have this programe. just sent in the survey/enrollment form to school, have to wait for result.
there are now total of 4 languages taught as a third language in some of the school (if the school applied) besides french. chinese will be the 5th one starting this year, if any school applied.

xother,
you are right, if staying in canada, french is important. as nowadays, bilingual in french and english is a bonus, esp, if you want a govt job. however, knowing mandarin nowadays, is a plus for them. as if they wish to go back to hk or go to work in china when they grow up.
my daughters' french is soso, although they got a grade A in school, but it is still not enough for them to communicate with a real french.

Re: Markham / Richmond

ckkwkl
It is interesting to know that French is a compulsory subject in ON. In Vancouver, student just to take it as second language and some do take Chinese/Spanish/Japanese instead of French. I met some older generation Chinese here and they suggest me not to take French as second language as French is not common in BC and most of their kids who grown up here dont speak French although they took it as second language. That I understand as we all take English as second language but it is not easy to pick it up.

If your daughter take one more subject on language, will that affect other classes?

no effect on other subjects. the school is suggesting school starts/ends 5 min earlier/later, 10 min less for lunch, 5 min less for each recess. total 30 min round up for each day. nothing can be controlled by school now, just wait for parent's response.

Re: Markham / Richmond

ckkwkl,
It doesnt sound right to me if kids have to squeeze the time like that. I prefer to pay for them for Chinese class separately and let me relax in school. Besides, 30mins class doesnt really teach much if they dont know any Chinese. Is class run daily basis? Or is it only for those who take Mandarin ?

Re: Markham / Richmond

xother,

it doesn't matter to me, as only just like 5 min earlier/later for school. besides, 50 min for lunch and 10 min for each recess is still acceptable. this is for the whole school and on daily basis. lessons will be taught according to each grade, fitting to their age. assuming that all kids are not familar with mandarin. for my opinion, kids will adapt to this system well, just depends on the parent's opinion for this programme.
an chance to learn an extra language is a plus, seems that quite a number of non chinese parents are in favour of this too.

Re: Markham / Richmond

ckkwkl,
Agree learning a new language is good, but how many people can really monitor more than 2?

just wonder do your daughters speak Chinese at home? Do they read any Chinese magazine/newspaper?

How about French, do they watch any French TV?

I think all langauges require practice and I dont mind if my daughter only speak english.

both of them speak cantonese at home, and can read some chinese words, like those from the chinese class, can read but not too good in writing. they said hard to remember the stroke. they seldom watch french channel at home, but they can communicate in french between themselves (esp. when they don't want me to know what they are talking about). my younger one will teach me some simple french, like blue, green, book, tv, apple etc.

Re: Markham / Richmond

ckkwkl,
I think it is good enough as long as they understand Chinese. Yes, writing is tough part and do you think they would like to work in HK/China one day?

Is your daughter going to Quebec this summer? It will be a good chance to practice her French.

I also learn Spanish through my daughter since she picks it up from daycare as well as Dora cartoon. It is useful when we play UNO. I know how to count 1-10 and most color in Spanish now!

Just wonder how long is the Chinese class offer on SAT? In BC, we have to pay directly from our pocket and the last one I signed up before was $110/semester for 2hrs session.
