I think it is good enough as long as they understand Chinese. Yes, writing is tough part and do you think they would like to work in HK/China one day? - - - this will be their own life, i will not bother, but if they have a chance and would like to, it will be an advantage that they build up chinese at this age. who knows what will be in the future, but at least it seems that it is a trend to learn chinese, esp mandarin all over the world now.

Is your daughter going to Quebec this summer? It will be a good chance to practice her French. - - - no. but my elder will be going to ottawa next week for a field trip, 3d2n.

I also learn Spanish through my daughter since she picks it up from daycare as well as Dora cartoon. It is useful when we play UNO. I know how to count 1-10 and most color in Spanish now! - - - my younger one knows how to count and some colours in spanish too, because of dora.

Just wonder how long is the Chinese class offer on SAT? In BC, we have to pay directly from our pocket and the last one I signed up before was $110/semester for 2hrs session. - - - the chinese class is 2.5 hours per session on saturday. $20 for the whole term from sept - june. this is not a private tutor, is organised by toronto catholic school board, but everyone from JK to G8 is welcome.

How old is your younger daughter? I thought Dora only attract to very young kids!
I understand the Chinese class in ON is not private tutor but how big is the class and who are they? Any foreigner learning there?

I wont say learing Mandarin is the trend but obviously we want our kids to learn Chinese since we are Chinese origin.

my girls are 8 and 12. my younger loved dora when she was small, she still remember how to count and some of the colours in spanish.

the class has around 10-20 students per class. there's no foreigner but they are welcome. however, i knew some non-chinese attend private chinese school themselves.

Dora seems to have some magic to do with kids! I thought when my daughter is older, she will think Dora is a dump cartoon and fancy Hilary Duff or Bratz.

Speaking of language, so far I havent met anyone who can monitor well on both Chinese and English, I mean speaking and writing. I suspect there is somthing to do with our brain. Yes, there is plenty of people who can monitor on speaking like your daughters, but I doubt they can do it on writing as well. One of my friend who came here under 10yrs and have a foundation on Chinese, but his english still has some accent. Or my neigbour is totally sound like Canadian but no writing Chinese at all.

As per my husband, it is easier to pick up European language as they are similar and I worry learning Chinese may interfere her to learn French as I can see many 2nd generation in BC dont speak French.
Please share your opinion on that.

english is not a problem for kids growing up in canada. but when regarding the monitor on their mother-tongue (no matter italian, spanish, korean or chinese etc.), will mainly depends on the attitude of parents and the degree of involvement of the kids. i came across some kids in the chinese class who are very good in chinese. they even write a speech for the speech festival at the school; and english is not a problem, as they are born in canada.

kids are very adaptable, they will absorb different languages easily. but of course, this must be continuously. even if kids are good in a foreign language when young, but if they stop practicing/speaking it for years, they will forget it eventually later. if kids keep on different languages, they will learn more and more. just take for an example as dora, the young kids know the counting 1-10 in spanish, but if you ask them to count in english, they can still do so. my daughter can count very fast and fluent in spanish at around 3 or 4, but have to think a while now.

May be we have different expectation on their English skill. Brought up here doesnt mean they can speak good english. It is similar to we all speak Chinese but how good is your writing and what words they use are another issue.
Yes, without practice all languages can be forgotten easily and that's why I am reluctant to push her to learn Chinese on SAT.
My husband is an example about learning single lanauge. I fall in love with his accent and I was shocked because his parent have very strong Indian accent. He brought up in English environment and only know English, now he can pick up different accent while it is not easy if your english is weak. He also start teaching our daughter the correct way of speaking english and my daughter also starting to correct me, so no silly English at home.

Long time didnt see you posting! What are you going to do with your MIL?

We will have perfect weather in Vancouver too and planning to visit differnet parks, museums, art gallery.... as we have a free passport to visit all tourist attractions.

nowadays just busy with work, and start doing the gardening stuff..
MIL got lots of doctor's appointment, regular check up, dentiest, bone density measurement, optometrist, diabetic specialst, podiatry, kidney special.... almost something in each week...

we will have some friend come to visit us in May 30 -June 11 from vancouver...

talking about the vancouver, are you planning to go back to Hk once you get your passport? Oasis airline offer CA$299 + tax one way ticket from vancouver to HK from July 1 till end of Nov.. you might want to check it out.

i am thinking about that too....

When your friends come over, are you going to do BBQ? It is nice to enjoy summer and have BBQ along!

yes, I heard the Oasis, but I wont go right after baby born. I need atleast 6month rest and I dont think we can get the passport so fast. Didnt you hear about the long queue on getting passport? I heard people waiting 6hrs outside the immigration. If you send my mail, it may take you more than 6months. My husband's colleague hasnt got his passport yet after 6months by mail! He suppose to attend a confenence in SEP in US but not sure if he can make it.

I am planning to go next year FEB for about 1 month before I went back to work, but all that is just a plan as it really depends on the baby's health.

Yes, you may go but make sure you know how much is a oneway back home price.

we have a great time, book the badminton court in the new badminton club near 16th/leslie.. for just $10/hr/court. played on both Sun/Monday... and will try to book few more in the coming sunday....

finished adding the grass seed, top soil to my back yard, do few planters on the stair way in the front yard..

might do the tree surrounding and plant more flowers in the comming weekend. will see if I have the mood to do so

Hi all,

We've just been to the Great Wolf Lodge at Niagara Lakes for3 nights over the Canada Day Weekend. It was great. My daughters love the indoor waterpark. What's so nice about it is that there are quite a few activitiesfor my elder daughter. So when my younger one was tired and needed anap, I can just take her back to the room for a nap, while my elder washaving fun somewhere.

I would recommend it to you.

You cannot cook at the lodge, but they have a microwave, fridge and coffee pot in every room. So you can heat up some baby food, or cook instant noodles etc. in the room.

The restaurants are not too expensive compares to other hotels. I have not looked at the a la carte menu, but I went to their lunch and dinner buffets:
Lunch: 9.99 for adult, 7.99 for age 4-12
Dinner: 19.99 for adult, 7.99 for age 4-12

They also have pizza hut express there, so you can always go there.
It is not bad.
