Can you help ? (and support)

I plan to have a BB this year, hopefully to be born next year just before summer. I am thinking of quitting my job as teaching has become very difficult nowadays. But I am very worried . Can I make a living by having home tutorials?

I have;
7 years of teaching English experience in secondary schools, going to have a Master degree in TESOL, met the benchmark.

I need to cover my insurance, which costs me almost $6,000. My husband may be able to have some extra income, but not sure yet.

Do yoy think I can make a living ? Can I call for a good price? Say $300 per hour ?

It depends on what kind of school you are now teaching. Some of my friends who are teaching in famous secondary/primary school, they charge $400 per hour. Normally, only those "rich" families (they will provide a driver to drive to and from their home) are willing to pay a good price, but for sure they are looking for a teacher with a better profile , e.g. overseas graduates, teaching in famous school, or introduced by some of their 'famous' friends.

For other normally clients, most of them are willing to pay a higher price for current teachers, but not much. I suggest you can teach in group if you want to make it a higher hourly paid. Students need longer time for group tutorial, e.g. 2 hours per session/$250, and you can have 3-4 students in a time. You have a better pay, and parents feel easier for the fee.

What my view is, while you are waiting for pregnancy(i tried for 8 months, still not bingo), try to take some students, to test the market, so you can have a clearer picture of how's life of a home tutor. Then, think how much you need to earn for living? Just $6000? or you'll need more after the bb born? How much more? How many hours you have to work to maintain the expenses? To compare with teaching in school, is it true that you can work less? Do you willing to earn less?

These are the questions I will always ask myself when I want to quit my job.

Just for your reference, I was doing home tutorial in 2004 for 3 months. Hard time, I just have only around $6500-7000 per month.

My case was:
Wake up at 8:30am, start tutorial at 9:30-10:30am (a P.1 student), then another lesson at 10:45-11:45am (P.6 student), these 2 students give me less than $100/hour only. I take these 2 at this price as in fact, not much student will be availble in the morning.

After the teaching in the morning, I prepared my lunch, do housework, and short sleeping. Start teaching again at 4:00pm and until 7:30 - 8pm, I finished all students lesson. I will then have my dinner at around 8:45pm.

Income is extremely NOT stable! This make me go back to normal school to teach. Anyway, I am still thinking to be a "part-time" music+maths teacher only. I am always thinking of starting my own tutorial school on teaching Olympic Maths or Kumon Maths.... well...... THINK HAR HO LA.....

Thank you for your suggestions, sisters, very detailed.

So it does not sound gd ! I dunno, i am really fed up with teaching full time in HK now, lots of stress and may lose the job any time as the situation is unstable now.

I do understand the reality, i just hope that i will have the courage to make the decision.

my mother in law is a business woman and we will inherit her business one day. my husband will also learn to make investment. And i am saving hard now.

So, I hope that I can have your support all the way.

by the way, siumuichu, hope you bingo soon and we can become mothers one day

to give a clearer picture, I am not piano major. I play clarinet and recorder, and I am teaching in a secondary school.

教琴的時薪比補習高 -- I agree, but for my case, I couldn't get as much students as piano tutor (even those only have grade 8 guy got more students than me!!)

One of my best friend who is a full time piano tutor, LTCL holder, have around $40K per month. But, I really think if I enjoy those life or not? I enjoy being a class teacher, growing up 40 students in one year, see them finish their CE Exam, see them got their job, contact me for dinner after they got their salary...etc. Music road is totally different. Indeed, I don't like having my dinner at 8:30pm or 9:30pm.

For some time I really don't like those only got grade 8 and start teaching, and earn a lot. This make parents think MOST music teachers have very good income. This is not true, and in fact I would say, does really a grade 8 guy could do the teaching job?

我都係小學的音樂老師。
我都聽過好多人考慮響家中教琴, 但係如果只係錢的考慮, 我諗你一定要諗清楚...

我都有朋友係全職教琴, 佢地多數一開始會響一星期幾日響一至兩間琴行度教, 凈返一、兩日教私人, 收入大約有$15k左右。我之前個鋼琴老師都係全職教, 佢大約有$40k一個月。
要諗清楚的係, 當初你點解諗住要響學校教書?
我諗收入當然係一個考慮, 不過教書的滿足感就未必可以透過教琴中得到喇!

所以慎重考慮啦!

講真，而家只係做私人補習，的確係好悶，始終會少好多同朋友、同事一齊工作o既日子，多數得自己一個大人工作...有時好悶，亦好似無乜人會同你傾下計，share下feeling(同輩)，但如果身為一個女人，如果想生小b，又想自己take care番o既話，無疑呢個係最搵錢同方便control自己時間的工作。

有少少不同意呢句。
我番過其他工, 又做過fulltime補習/教琴之類, 都係覺得番教書工仲stable過其他工。

我班教琴的朋友講, 教琴0個d, 手停口停, 又冇強積金, 冇紅白假期, 冇事假, 冇病假，一有乜事都會影響收入。於是我有朋友生完個仔，今日出院，聽日要繼續教琴。

另外的係，教琴同補習都係咁話，除非你諗住乖乖地搵八千至一萬蚊收工，否則其實都係搵命搏。多勞多得呀! 學生話要加堂唔通你話唔加，學生話考試要上兩堂唔通又話唔得？個個學生都加堂，邊有咁多時間?!
