hey. Alisonli,
they got a lot summer camp in 上海and 北京.. I bet, they may be better to learn from the native speaker.
Fat bear and his sisters all speak spanish.. even Amanda's cousins, they speak spanish too (learn from friends at school and from the class) so I don't think that she has a problem --but I have the problem with that. I don't know what they are talking about..
Xother,
my parents live at 西半山, 啓思, woodland, 禮賢會just at the corner, even for the 社署day care, we got a few there as well.. before she goes back to hk, I will ask my parents to do some research. Amanda may live with my parents or her cousins if she lives in hk island, otherwise, she probably will stay with fat bear's uncle at Tai Po, then she will attend the daycare inside the 會所..
not so sure if I will go back with her, mostly not.. unless Ying EE can go with her (as Gabriel attends full time day care by then).

Xother,
shame on us.. when we speak Cantonese to Amanda, she will response in English, then we will response in English as well.. *sigh*..
I was yell when I took her out one day, a italian big mama, asked me to speak cantonese to her when she heard that I spoke to Amanda in English, she said.. "don't let the child lost their Talent to speak in my mother tongue"...
when she goes to my 99 home, she only speaks chinese anyway, as 99 and 62 only speak in cantonese.
even my mom, she only speaks in cantonese.
I wonder.. should I apply the HKID for her next year (again).. as she is going to stay in hk for almost 3 months.. ** as travel visa is good for 90days**

yeah, I think it may be beneficial to find a mandarin speaking nanny if you want your kids to learn Mandarin. :) I sent my son (he is almost 21 months now) to the licensed family daycare and the caretakers there speak Mandarin. All the other kids there also speak Mandarin.
I think my son understand both Cantonese (I speak Cantonese, English, & Mandarin to him at home) and Mandarin. When someone left, he would waive his hand and said "bye-bye, 再見(in Mandarin)". If we asked him "還要不要" in Mandarin, he will reply "要" in Mandarin. If we ask him "Chung 要不要" (Cantonese), he will reply "要" in Cantonese. Hopefully, he will retain all the Chinese that he learn when he is older.

Nillemami,
Yes, you need to be in HK with Amanda if you want to sumbit the form. It doesnt matter how long she stays, it is a matter of how you handle after the revalidation of your status. HK immigration will give you a time frame to change the status of your child and you need to advance them if you cannot make it and reply with approx time frame when you can come back to finish it
Regarding the language, I dont think hiring a nanny is good idea unless you really need a nanny. It is like hire a philippino maid in HK in order to teach your child English. My daughter is 5yrs old, she was in Mandarin daycare since 14months till 2.5yrs. She didnt pick up anything except a confusing mind. We worried her so much as she seems to have speech delay as she cannot pick up so many languages. I know some parent will persist to speak but for me, I prefer her to be strong in one language first atleast. If she wants to learn more, then I will find the way to help her.
As my husband only speak English, we have to speak English at home and watch English channels. As a result, my daughter's first language is English and she is doing very well on it. I try to speak Cantonese to her and send her to Chinese class, she is not interest as she thinks she only need to speak English. After we sent her to HK she realized HK is a place only speak Chinese and ....she correct me it is "Cantonese" and now she is very happy to go to Chinese school as she wants to speak Cantonese to her auntie. She likes to write as she can show off to my family that she knows Chinese.
Yes, kids can learn language fast but they can also forget it fast. few of my friends have told me that their kids use to speak one language but they can completely wipe out if they dont practice it.
My neighbour's daughter, mother speak Japanese to her, Grandparent speak Cantonese and daddy speak English and till now, she is 4, I can barely understand her as she always mix with some other languages.
Mandarin is most spoken language but since I dont speak Mandarin, I dont bother to send my daughter to learn as she cannot practice it. Any language requires practice and it will be easier if the kids know why they need to learn it. I know in many cases if you speak your home language at home, then the kids can easily pick up, but since my husband's exception, I will let my daughter to use English as first language and I will see if I can motivate her to learn Chinese.

which forms did you fill out? do you need to bring kieran back to hk for a review every year ??
