side effect : 得過前列腺癌或乳癌的人不要服用 DHEA 。由於它是荷爾蒙，理論上有可能會刺激荷爾蒙依賴性癌症的生長。基本上係中醫各度每個人都有癌細胞, 所以我覺得少食為妙.

Hi Frisbe,

I have a question about DHEA. Because I need to work oversea for one year and can not get pregnant. My doc suggested me to take Yasmin (pill) to reserve my ovaries. I am 37 now. I just wonder can I take DHEA when I am taking Yasmin. Thanks.

It is true that DHEA is not for everyone, particularly those who are young. You still have a lot of time to try different thing. For your reference, I copied parts of the paper published by Dr. Gleicher a few months ago. He used the following criteria for DHEA patients.

"We considered a patient qualified for DHEA supplementation, if she had failed a prior IVF cycle with less than 4 oocytes retrieved and/or demonstrated elevated FSH levels (R10 mIU/ml) and/or had been refused continuous IVF treatment with autologous oocytes at another IVF center."

If you do not have any of these problems, they would not recommend you to take it. It is important to know your ovary conditions. When your ovaries can still produce enought eggs and good quality eggs, there is really no need to take DHEA.

Actually, DHEA is really only for women who have severe problems in getting pregnant for reasons like:

1. advanced age (40 or more) because they have "diminished ovarian reserve" or
2. women who are younger but have "premature ovarian aging".

If you do not have any of these problems, no need to take DHEA. The quote in my previous chat is from the research study titled:

AGES 40–47 YEARS. N. Gleicher, D. Barad. Center for Human Reproduction,

This is for women with advanced age.

Hi, friends,

I had the phone consultation with Dr. Gleicher in New York yesterday. I will summarize what he told me about DHEA as follows:

1. Who should take DHEA?
a) Women who are older than 40 or
b) younger women who produces less than 4 eggs under high dose of stimulation. They are consider poor responders.

2. How long should you take it?
You can continue to take it when you are doing ivf cycles. No need to stop during stimulation and after embryo transfer. Just continue to take it until you are confirmed pregnant.

3. Dosage of DHEA?
He recommends us not to take the over-the-counter DHEA (like the ones we got at Mannings) because we do not know how much can be absorbed in our bodies. His patients use micronized and pharmaceutical grade, 25 mg and 3 times per day. Total 75 mg per day. You can order it from the U.S. Many places carry it and I found the following website useful about this kind of DHEA.

4. How long will it take effect?
It usually takes 4 to 5 months for it to reach the peak effect. It is better to do ivf after 4 to 5 months taking it.

5. Any side effects?
He did not see any side effects in his patients.

6. If you want to have a phone consultation with him, just call their center and arrange a time with him. It costs U.S. $325 for such consultation. They charge your credit card. You better prepare the history of your fertility, i.e., when did you do IUI or ivf and what were the results, ect. if you talk to him because he will just ask for the information on the phone in order to help you. He also suggested me a stimulation protocol for my condition.

Dear friends,

I just want to update you with my DHEA progress. I have some good news about the DHEA. I have been taking it for 5 weeks now. Before taking it, my DHEA-S level was 114. Now, it is 405 (34-105 is the normal range). Dr. Gleicher told me that after one month taking it, he hoped I would get up to 250. I am happy that it is 405. I took the GNC one during this 5 weeks. Therefore I think it is OK to continue to take it if you don't want to purchase the micronized pharma. grade ones suggested by Dr. Gleicher. My FSH is 5.3 this month.

Today I found something very exciting in my ultrasound. My antral follicle counts on Day 5 was only 6. Today, I checked again after stimulation on Gonal-F 225 IU for only 3 days, the number of follicles went up to 10. In my case, after stimulation, usually the number of follicles decreases because of my poor stimulation. This is so far is the best one with the highest number of follicles. Last month, after 6 days of stimulation, I only got 1 egg acceptable. Dr. Leung had to cancel my ivf cycle. I am closely monitoring the changes. I really believe that DHEA works. For those who do not respond well to stimulation or with high FSH, it is nothing to lose to take the DHEA. Check the DHEA-S level as a baseline and see whether your body is absorbing it. So far I have no side effects except my facial is bit more oily.

Sorry for my error. Normal range is 34-430 ug/dl from my report. I got 405 ug/dl this month.

DHEA-S Level is it check by blood test? When to check it? Can it check with FSH on Day2/3?

Your DHEA-S Level is increasing from 114 to 405, but why dr want you to up to 205?? You already over this figure...What is the best figure as yours (405) is nearly hit the roof of the normal range...

Sorry my understanding is not so good...

Dr. Gleicher hoped that my level can reach AT LEAST 250 after only 1 month of taking DHEA. However, my body absorbs very well, better than expected. Therefore it can reach a higher level.

You can check DHEA-S level at any time. It is a blood test. It is not depended on what day of each period cycle, like Day 3 FSH. I just do it with Day 3 FSH because one blood draw can do both at the same time.

Thanks for your sharing, just wonder why you are having the Gonal-F 225IU stimulation , are you going to have treatment this month? Or just want to see the effect.

I have been taking DHEA about 6 weeks now, I think I should check the DHEA-s again, I missed my Day 3 follicles scan as it was the Easter holidays.

Can you tell me where to buy yhr GNC DHEA, I used to buy from Watsons, and I will finish them soon, seems the GNC one is cheaper and have good effect too.

I got my DHEA at the GNC store at Central, California street, near Lan Kwai Fong. Their hotline is 2299-3390. You can ask for their discount. 高齡產婦 also got a good deal earlier in Mannings.

Yes, I am dong a ivf cycle this month. I did not expect so many follicles but I just wanted to try. Dr. Gleicher said that it is better to wait for 4 to 5 months to get the peak effect of the DHEA. He said that at my age, I should not wait for that long. Therefore I just try. I did one cycle last month. It was so bad that I had to cancel it and did and IUI instead. I still do not know how many mature eggs I can eventually have. There are still a few more days to go.

You can check the DHEA-S level at the doctor's office. You are the one who pay the fee. The doctor cannot reject you. My doctor does not believe in DHEA and he is rather discouraging. Again, I do not care about their view on DHEA as long as it works for me.

I thought about the FSH problem for you guys if you do ivf in the public hospitals. You can check your FSH on Day 2 with your private doctor. If it is high, do not tell the public hospital and you just give them some excuse to cancel the cycle. But if it is low on Day 2, you can do their blood test on Day 3. I do not know how the hospital operate, just thinking about a way to get around the problem.
