Your wife

My wife is working as causal right now, while i am having my days-off, she will pick up a shift, then i will @ home taking care of our little daughter
Lucky, my hospital half of the staff is not white australian, mainly from Russia, China, TW, JP, Korean, or Ireland or UK.........................
i think if you job into them, should be ok as Chinese, as long as try to speak to ppl, instead of not communcate with other, in the same time, we have a lot of staff here which ppl dont like for example, chinese from mainland china even they have PHD level, but ppl dont understand their english, that is why ppl dont like them, due to cant talk to them.............
btw, i dont have good english also, but i do talk to my workmates a lot, always go out to have dinner, happy togather ^^
well................really depends on your boss, my manager is from UK, she like ppl hardworking and that is it, so she did promote my frd who is chinese from mainland to CNE and also also acting Manager when she is on leave, someone my frd acting as after hrs bed manager also, for myself, she did give me a lot of chance & education, so i can work as CNS & CNE in my ward ^^
that problem is due to around 5 years ago, one of the uni in NSW (ACU) allow & pass some of the student from mainland or overseas which cant speak english at all. It ends up why now overseas nurse need to pass english test in the same time, why if you want to do your new grad progamme in NSW area, you need to do ielts exam also............
sorry mine case is a little bit different, due to i used to hold my student visa which i was studying in USYD for nursing degree around 10 years ago after i done my nursing school training from QM............so mine own experience may not useful for you
