mama724,
I am no expert in English / phonics, but .....
Native English speaker does not equal somebody who knows how to teach English properly, nor a teacher in English, nor somebody holding suitable qualifications which allows him to teach English as a second / foreign language.
A teacher in an international school need not be a teacher in English either. What subject(s) does he teach ?
So what are the qualifications of this teacher ? Does it include TEFL ? If not, or you haven't checked before, you are just wasting your $$$ and should do better with other phonics / English classes instead of 1 to 1 with a native speaker.
Kids attend classes not only for the academic side of things, but also for interaction, making friends, etc which cannot be achieved through 1 to 1 tutoring.
A final point - how old is your kid and in what class ?
Is 1 to 1 really necessary ?
