if you work for the government, the work load is probably alot less and it's a more laid back environment. but i dont think the paid would be as good as private company.

If talking about senior position, definitely a position in private company pays more. My friend's husband who has a PhD earns $400K in the 1st year, $500K in the 2nd and possibly $600K in the 3rd. But, he said that there's a ceiling in the govt and he can earn more if he works in a private company. But, it depends on his age and his aggression. Gov't job is more stable. So, if I only look for a general clerical work, working for the city or the federal govt would pay more. However, even govt positions nowaday may not be permanent. The govt hire quite a lot of temp or provisional workers so that there's more flexibility on budget cut in the future.
