Bingo!!! Reading the newspaper and working there are 2 different things. They can't earn money and get popular here because they are not doing good in marketing and they don't response to the market needs.
Keep trying to hunt a job. It sometimes takes so long to find a good job. I have sent over 500 resumes at the very beginning to find my first job in here (which was a referral from friend instead). I will start my job hunt again next year after my maternity leave.

Sometimes, it's really disappointing that we get nothing if we just work but not gossip. I was taught by my parents that doing my part the best is the way but I found that it's different in the real world. The one who complaint the most in a tactful way get the best deal. Maybe we should start to play politics in the office. I really hate to do that but if it is the way to earn the best, I have no choice. I need to earn more to raise my kids.

睇左你地講咁多, 等我都加把嘴啦..其做 working mom 好慘架, 等於做兩份工:-|. 好似我咁,雖然話做政府工, 但係都冇乜保障, 好似宜家我個 branch 賺唔夠我地既expense, 我地就要好似孤兒仔咁, 等其他賺到錢既branch 收養我地, 但係另一方面就有錢去請contractor, 你話吹唔吹脹

. Office Politic 仲加一大羅, 年姿長既老鬼就講多過做, 有乜死貓就係我地尼D新食... 好在我轉左入尼個offsite office, 得自己一個, 做完自已野就吾理咁多喇.... 但係宜家都唔知留在原位定係俾人收養.....最唔好係打仗, 攪到我D客仔全部cut budget.... 唔做政府工你唔知, D政府部門全部都係鬼打鬼, 錢字行頭...... 呢D野返屋企同老公講佢吾會明, 仲反而同我話佢公司既事,仲話佢都好煩.....大佬, 你年尾有花紅喎....我年尾得個桔... 都只有係度同你地"sun"ja....

.去...要去呀!最少睇下佢offer 你幾多, 然後決定去留, $$多同commute 時間少左咁你有多D時間比Amanda 同雞睥仔呀!

My hubby wants me to find a job of the city government or federal gov't because of the stability and the benefits. I told him that politics is the same in either gov't or private company. Anyway, I'm underpaid in my current position even though I voiced out in the past years, my manager and my supervisor could not do anything. They said that it's depended on HR decision. Who believe! They have bonus and I maybe given a $20 starbucks card!! Anyway, money, flexibility and working hours are more important for working moms like us. Who cares about the others, either in gov't or private company, right?

咁我份工又真係好有彈性, 有乜事係可以即刻走....但係你話有保障又吾係咁講ga, federal goverment 因為打仗,而家好窮, 唔好彩真係會有RIF (Reduce in force), 不過通常都叫D年資長既自動退休... 但係你估唔到, 仲要睇你老細保唔保你......City might be better...... my aunt works in the city (NYC) 聽講話都唔錯, 但係你果邊點樣, 要搵人問下羅

If talking about senior position, definitely a position in private company pays more. My friend's husband who has a PhD earns $400K in the 1st year, $500K in the 2nd and possibly $600K in the 3rd. But, he said that there's a ceiling in the govt and he can earn more if he works in a private company. But, it depends on his age and his aggression. Gov't job is more stable. So, if I only look for a general clerical work, working for the city or the federal govt would pay more. However, even govt positions nowaday may not be permanent. The govt hire quite a lot of temp or provisional workers so that there's more flexibility on budget cut in the future.

r u kidding. 600k? that's alot . i will go for that phd. what major is he in? i think he is just one of the lucky one. it might be too boring for u if you work for the government. do u really need that kind of stabilitiy ? what does your husband do? maybe you could ask him to work for the government instead or get the phd =pppp

wah, what kind of gov job that pay $600k? Very sensitive/high-tech area? I only know a friend got over $500k + Tons of bonus. He had a PHD in econ/finanance and he used to work in the wall street. I know a lot of ppl with pdh but most of them doesn't make that much (depends on the field). I think PHD is not really usefull in terms of making big money.

i also raised the same question as yours - is it $60k instead??? "generally" the government jobs pay less than the similar positions at private/public companies, but they're more relaxed (boring) and more stable.
i was thinking maybe he works for the FBI or something which is kinda risky so they pay u better to compensate for that. i have an ex-coworker who quit his IT consulting job and joined the FBI.

u're right ... generally most Phds don't make as much money as u think. i think most Phd folks just like to study and they're hardworking but they're not very good at making money. but of course there're always exceptions.

if i were u, i would definitely pick the job with less commuting time even if it pays a little less. i hate wasting the time getting stuck on the freeway. meanwhile i don't like working for chinese or a company with a lot of chinese employees, coz they're usually too demanding or too competitive.

just watched the news few days back. the nurses at CPMC (California Pacific med. ctr. in San Fran) complained that they still need to carry their pagers at lunch breaks, etc. most doctors, nurses and patients over there are chinese. it's a good hospital and a lot of moms gave birth there too.

其实做政府工係咪真係有好好嘅福利?我從未幫政府打工,不過一聽見人工加得較慢我都覺得唔易接受.因我唔係賺$買花戴,最好bring in more income,用嚟改善吓生

Sorry, typo. $40K, 50K and 60K instead. My friend's husband worked in IRS on research... "creating" and analysing the behaviors of people and check for hints of people reporting the wrong income, hinding taxable income, etc. The income he made is not that much but for a new worker for only 2 years, it's not too bad. Plus, he's living in Atlanta where the living standard is really low. A condo of 2 bedroom costs somewhat $200K+. My friend does not need to work in the 1st year and is now studying in college for her 2nd degree.

I have a friend who works in Fire Dept of SF and she said that the benefits are very good. She can have a 6 month off for her maternity and her boss is still fine. Moreover, her working hour is so flexible. She can go to work at 8am or 9am whenever she likes. But, it is not easy to get a job there.
