语言的学习与文化的了解脱离不了关系，要提高孩子对语言学习的兴趣，增加孩子对文化的了解，是有效的方法之一。世界各个民族，其祖先都留下许多好听的童谣，这些常常是其文化的精髓，应该让孩子从小就学唱一些流传于英美民间的童谣。
英国人把童谣看成一门正式的学问，编成启蒙教材，由保姆和幼儿园教师做系统的介绍。对英国的孩子来说，五岁以前是属于童谣的时代，有人说“英国的儿童教育是在童谣的引导及推动下才有成效的”，这似乎不无道理。
台湾的家长普遍认为外语越早学效果越好，因此，双语幼儿园到处林立，英文学习有越来越低龄化的趋势。然而孩子学习英文的时间一旦拉长，不同阶段的英文教材与教法势必就要有所区别，不能永远只注重语言技能，一味地讲究生字、语法规则记诵以及对话的演练，忽视英美语言中的文化。应该让孩子了解英美的文化，从而自如地使用英语。
笔者特别针对学龄前幼儿的身心发展特点，编写了《教小小孩唱英文》（1、2、3）三本游戏本，让幼儿在学校或家庭进行英文童谣的吟唱、数数、走迷宫、涂色、剪贴等活动，提高其学习英语的兴趣，扩展其他技能的学习。三本游戏本中所选择的30首童谣及练习的长短和难易，按不同年龄层幼儿的身心发展有不同的挑选与设计，家长或教师可以根据幼儿英语学习情况选择。
从事儿童教育工作的我，很难不给孩子最好的。即使简单的，如走迷宫的练习，在设计时除了考虑到与英文童谣的内容相关，强化该主题的学习之外，也要考虑画面如何传达美感孩子。因此，特别请好友也是知名的图画书作者施政廷绘制所有插图，以求画面的真实与美观。
每本游戏本附有CD，可供幼儿反复跟唱。为了让孩子能听清楚每首英文童谣的发音，能准确地跟唱，达到语言学习的目的，录制时第一次特别请配音的外籍人士先将每首童谣念读一遍，第二遍才配上音乐演唱，最后一遍则提供单纯的音乐伴唱，让孩子自行练习。
