Flax Oil and Flaxseed for Eczema
Important: Remember that people with atopic eczema have trouble metabolizing fats and will benefit from supplementing with enzymes to break down the fats.
How I Discovered Flax Oil Helps Eczema
I did an electronic search in the Bible for the word "skin" to see what I could find to help us with eczema. Verses about linen and flax came up as a result of that search (linen comes from flaxseed). So, I started looking into flax and linen to see how they could help eczema. What I found was miraculous!
Linen is the oldest textile material in the world. Its history goes back many thousands of years, well into the Stone Age. Flax has been eaten by the human race for over 5,000 years. In 5,000 BC flax was cultivated in Babylon. In the 11th Century, it was used to helped cure many skin diseases, including leprosy.
The miracle is that flax is the richest source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids at 57% (over two times the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids as fish oils). Flax oil requires less processing and costs 80% less than fish oil. Unrefined organic flax oil is also a rich source of electrons.
Benefits
Flaxseed is also one of the richest sources of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen which may protect against cancer, particularly hormone-sensitive cancers such as those of the breast and prostate.
Flaxseed contains essential vitamins and minerals. It is particularly rich in potassium, providing about seven times as much as a banana on a dry-weight basis.
From Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, CNC, flaxseed:
Flaxseed promotes strong bones, nails, and teeth, as well as healthy skin. Used for colon problems, female disorders and inflammation. Flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. They are also a good source of the B vitamins, protein, and zinc. They are low in saturated fats and calories, and contain no cholesterol; and, as a matter of fact, flax oil decreases probability of heart attack and stroke, because it helps keep the arteries clean and free of plaque and cholesterol.
EFAs are necessary/crucial for infants, nursing mothers, and children.
How Soon Will It Make A Difference?
The following were typical periods of time in which subjects of a pilot study noted the beneficial effects of the Omega-3 flaxseed supplements. A long wait is not always necessary before the results are visible:
Time after taking oil supplement:
2 Hours: Mood improved, feeling of calm, depression relieved.
2-7 Days: Skin smoother, with less flaking and scaling; backs of hands and fingers smoother.
2-14 Days: Relief for disturbed mental patients; relief from feelings of anxiety.
2-6 Weeks: Osteoarthritis relieved, with easier movements and less inflammation and pain. Bursitis and other soft tissue inflammations reduced. Tinnitus and noises in the ears subside. Dandruff and flaking of the scalp less noticeable; dry skin alleviated.
2-4 Months: Rheumatoid pain diminished. "Easy bruising" reduced. Choking spasms subside. Fewer muscular spasms; no nighttime leg cramps; relief from ocular spasms. Relief from itching and burning sensations. Improved skin color. Reduced sun sensitivity.
3-6 Months: Diminished food allergies. Healing of chronic infections. Disappearance of rough, bumpy skin on upper arms. Improved alcohol tolerance. Improved cold tolerance. Lessening of fatigue. Increased calm and feeling of well-being."
How Much Flax Oil We Should Take?
Some people prefer to take capsules as opposed to taking the oil. Whatever your preference, please be aware of the following:
Oil:
One tablespoon of flax oil per 100 lbs. is recommended. There are 14 grams of flax oil in one tablespoon. If you weigh closer to 200 pounds, 2 tablespoons per day is recommended. Since 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon, 1 1/2 teaspoons would be recommended for children who weigh 50 lbs.
I dip my tortillas in flax oil (salted) ... and I love it. Hard for me to take it any other way.
Capsules:
Since, flax capsules come in 1,000 mg, between ten and fourteen capsules per day for adults is recommended. 1,000 mg = 1 gram.
Three Final Notes
1. To help you get the most out of flaxseed oil, try to limit the refined oils you consume. This includes hydrogenated oils. These oils are metabolized in the same pathways as the natural oils and can block their functions. Moderation is good, nothing radical.
2. There are special proteins in yogurt or cottage cheese (non-fat or low-fat) that enhance the properties of the EFA's; so, mixing the oil with either one is beneficial.
3. Vitamins A, C, E, B-2, B-3, B-6, Pantothenic acid, B-12, biotin, and minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, and zinc are all involved in EFA metabolism. Taking a good multivitamin and mineral supplement with special attention to B-6 is recommended.
